Will be towing 2000 Geo behind RV this summer on a tow dolly. Steering wheel must NOT be locked so must leave key in ignition. Need to disable the 'key in' chime or it will be 'ding-donging' as we go down the road. Could leave it but afraid it might run the battery down after five or six hours.

Install a battery disconnect switch, or remove the battery cable while you are towing.

Exactly - would like to 1) install an on/off switch in power source or 2) cut power source. I can hear the dingy thing but having a bit of a problem finding the right wire.

I thought the chime was in the instrument cluster.

If all you want to do is disable the key chime...look for the two wires at the Ignition switch on the lock cylinder side (they will be coming out towards the instrument panel). the button switch is actually installed with the lock cylinder so the only way to remove it is to disassemble the lock cylinder...but if you splice into the wires and install a toggle switch in one of the lines you can disable it... :type

First, it will not chime going down the road. It only chimes when the key is in the ignition and the drivers side door is open. Now if your towing with the door open, well, :whistle :lol

Second, the chime is VERY easy to find and unplug. Sitting in the drivers seat, it is directly in front of your left shin. Pull off the large panel under the steering wheel, reach in to the side closest to the door and up slightly. Your "feeling" for a small back box bolted to the dash plastic with one screw. Unplug the connecter and done. :thumb

I do not think you want to leave the ignition switch on for six hours without unplugging the battery power.

Unlocked, NOT on.
That being said, I agree with Big Rhino. I would disconnect the battery as well. ^o)

The relay (botton switch) on my driver door jamb is covered with a black rubber boot and controls both the dome light and the key-in-switch-door-open chime.
Lift up at the bottom of the rubber and you will see the one screw that holds it on.
Take out the screw and the assembly will pull out.
Cut the black wire such that you can splice it back together at a later date if you want (there is only one wire.) No more ding.
You will notice that the dome light will not come on any more when you open the driver door, but the dome light will still come on by opening the passenger door. The dome light will still operate normally except when you open the driver door.
But before you do that, is the key-in chime dinging when the doors are closed?
