I have a 99 Chevy metro 5 speed and yesterday while out doing some running around I went to pull out from a red light and a very bad vibration started when I released the clutch in first gear and now does it every gear change, it's a terrible, violent vibration, I only hear a slight noise when I press clutch pedal which wasn't there before so that's why I ask Throwout bearing or is it something more serious? |

More than likely its a failed friction disk. The coil springs in it fail and rattle around. When you press the clutch pedal does it disconnect from the flywheel? This is a pretty common problem with our Metros clutches. Welcome to the forum Loki. |

Check the first post in the Wall of Shame thread for one owner's solution to this problem. And while you have it taken apart enough to get to the clutch disk, toss a new TO bearing in, just because ... |

Agreed, sounds like a bad clutch disc. Perhaps it threw or broke one spring...or more. |

Sounds like you may be pulling the trans. Usually a PITA in most cars, but not bad at all in these metros. |

And a new pilot bearing. Its the bearing that gets all the work. Its the smallest bearing in the system for the trans. Its external, but does a lot of work.

Thanks for the help guys, getting ready to tear into it and check clutch plate for damage, just wanted to make sure other people thought it was clutch before taking the time to take it apart |

The pilot bearing removal tool will not work on ours. I put a bunch of grease and used a transmission or starter bolt to press more grease in there until the bearing popped out. |

Its quicker and cleaner to take the fly wheel off and change the pilot bearing. Just pound it out and back in re install fly wheel. |

Why bother with all that grease? Just pull the flywheel, find the proper size socket & tap or press it out. Reverse procedure to install. |

Also make sure to use a little Loctite on the flywheel bolts. Its important that they do not back out. Ever.
