Something the salesman told me about the turbo.....for it to kick in the car needs to build up it's "boost." I don't understand the technicalities involved with turbo engines, but I can seriously say when I gave it the gas, the cars MOVED!!
You have to allow the turbo to spool up (get turning faster by using the faster moving exhaust gas produced by the faster engine rpms). The time it takes for the slow moving turbo to start spinning fast enough to produce good boost pressure is called lag. More than likely the little turbo on that Fiesta did not have much lag so you didn't feel it. Also, more than likely the salesman didn't have a freaking clue what he was talking about or how a turbo works.

Some basic non-technical turbo stuff here (just the first video I found, probably much better ones out there):

Me standing by my dream turbo for the Metro. It would have a little lag but once spooled up - WATCH OUT!

on a direct injection gas engine there is zero turbo lag......if the computer is programmed properly....
when you suddenly hit the accelerator hard, the next direct injection timing event is fired very late, basicaly fired into the exhaust stroke....spooling the turbo instantly.

As a mechanic since 96 , i say buying a new car is a huge massive waste of money . If i was to buy a car it damn sure wouldnt be a ford , id go toyota corrolla . But once again id buy a nice used car fix it up and save thousands .
haven't seen very many 1zz oil burners I take it?

Ford has been building a great product the last 15 years.

Watch out for those EGTs and premature turbine failure! Anti-lag is a dangerous sport.

Anyways, why not finance the car and then just pay the total cost? Is that not an option. I've always read about people financing for 30 years (a house) and paying way over their premium to pay it off in 10 (just an example). Why not do that? Dealers don't want cash, they can't collect free money off of minimum payments.

I just got one of those cars yesterday. With under 300 miles on it, the stock lie-o-meter is reporting roughly 38 mpg in town. This is in moderate traffic, driving gently but not hypermiling, with the a/c turned off.

As the new owner of one of those direct injected turbo fiestas, I can assure you that there is indeed turbo lag. Not much, but it's definitely there.

I just test drove a sedan fiesta 1.0 5-speed (only option of course), fiesta st, and a base focus 5-speed today. I noticed the lag in the 1.0 as well. It wasn't bad, but when it kicks in it was alright --being used to driving my metro, I ended up shifting it initially as I would the metro and that was a complete mistake. Not bad, but I also don't like the $18k price tag that goes along with it. If Ford would price it like a slightly depreciated 2014 Mirage (yea, right....), then I'd be more interested in buying one. The ST was a very punchy ride -- very very fun to drive. Get up and go in every gear. The focus base stick felt more like an average small car in the "get up and go" aspect in my opinion. A buddy of mine suggested I test the Focus ST out if I liked the Fiesta ST, (which of course, I did) but unfortunately the dealer I went to didn't have one.

Also drove a 2014 Mirage earlier in the week and felt it lacked something. Got it up to a little over 100mph on that little 1.2L on the open road after a ton of build up of course, but just having some unrealistic fun with it. I still wouldn't drop the cheddar for it.

The thing I'm learning is the difference between turbocharging for adequate performance vs turbocharging for exceptional performance. All of the gasoline powered vehicles I've had in the past that were turbocharged were that way because they wanted enough power to have a bunch of fun, not because they were making an otherwise-weak engine perform acceptably. So, I'm somewhat underwhelmed by the performance of the fiesta under boost, but then I remember that it's more than good enough for normal traffic, and that I'm getting 3 cylinder 60 cubic inch mileage while having that reserve of power. That makes it fine again mentally.

Everything seems great about the Fiesta, and I was ready to go out and test drive with cash in my pocket, until..........I got a look at that awful dash. Now, maybe it is designed to have everything at your fingertips but even so I just could not look at that dash every day for the next 10 years...........For me the aesthetics are just one big FAIL.

I don't much care for it either. But, I'm not going to let something that just looks bad to me keep me from getting what I want when the rest of it is so good. I'll get used to seeing the dash and stop noticing the ugliness.

Yeah, it does have a 9 digit keypad on it. It looks silly as hell, but putting up with it is worth it. Last night I took the car out on the interstate and set the cruise at 65 mph. It was under ideal conditions-65 degrees outside, light traffic, tires set to near sidewall max in front and to ford spec (38 psi) in rear. I ran for about 12 or 14 miles like that, and the mileage indicator said 53.7 mpg. The car currently has less than 400 miles on it.

Very interested in checking one of these out, but still none around here for sale. Would I be out of line asking what you got it for? Dealer in Baltimore had one a couple weeks ago for 14,300 plus freight & taxes, $200 processing. Gone now. Also want to ck out the new Honda Fit. I like that cool rear folding seat that lies totally flat or the entire seat folds up out of the way.

$16k. The honda fit is cool, but doesn't get anywhere NEAR the mileage of the fiesta. I think the difference is over 10 mpg on the highway, but better double check me on that. I'd print something out from the internet, like one of the magazine reviews of the car, and go climb on the ass of your local dealer. If you do, tell them that the 3 cylinder option is hidden as an exterior package in ford's literature.

Yeah the current Fit blows for mpg, but the new one coming out this month is supposed to get 33 city & 41 hwy. Ive never owned a Honda that I couldn't get well above it's rating. I'm hoping they've updated the seat comfort as people say the seats are horrible after awhile. The Fiesta people seem to give the seats a good rating tho. What say yee? I agree with Old Man about the dash. The 50 button radio is crazy. So stupid you can't get the Sony setup & some nice spoke wheels to go on it too. Are you on Fiestafaction yet? Keep us posted on your likes / dislikes. Car Nut out.
