This back yard mechanic and several pros have not been able to remove the fill plug on my 1994 Metro. Does anyone know an alternate way to fill a manual transaxle? Humbly yours, pickleman.

Pull the speedo out very carefully and fill it thru that hole, only if you cannot get the correct fill plug out. You might gain something from this thread,

When you fill through the spedometer hole you can use the speedometer gear for a dip sitck. when the oil is at the top of the plasitc gear it is full.

Mine fought me, but the right size 1/2" drive socket and as much cheater pipe as I could swing lying on my back helped it see the error of its ways. It came along quietly, so I didn't have to mess with the speedo drive. One slip at full torque, though, and it would have been a round plug and a permanent part of the tranny case!

Big Rhino, you are the man. I was about to go through the reverse switch. Perfesser, mine is 3/8" drive.

Those square plugs are 10 mm. so that is part of the problem using a 3/8" ratchet.

You can also remove one of the bolts that hold the clutch cable mount on top of the trans and fill from there. Remember, 2.5 Quarts is all you need.

You sure about that? Seems awfully high.

I have a cutaway Metro tranny in my classroom. Lemme check and see how close they line up. I'll let you know this afternoon.

Yes I'm sure, I would never put anything on the internet that isn't true.

When I changed from a 4.37 to a 4.1 a couple of months ago I specifically checked that. The 4.1 showed a little above the gear (completely covering the gear) when 2 1/2 quarts of syncromesh was installed.

My fill plug required a good 6 point socket and a 3 foot breaker bar.

Sorry I can't get you a pic of that alignment today. The transmission is in the shop being worked on right now. I'll try to chase it down tomorrow and get you a good shot or two of it.

Good point, sorry I questioned you. The Internet wouldn't allow it if it were wrong.

Just seemed high in the mental picture I conjured up. I guess that drive housing is longer than I was imagining.
