exhaust fell off and is better MPGs

So i had an exhaust put back on....the part after the cat but before muffler. the
muffler is not on. after getting the pipe on its much quieter but th check engine light kicked on. before it was for the egr. i need to check the code....we shall see

I've seen a few clogged or very leaky factory mufflers. I'm pretty sure leaky can actually be worse for MPG in some situations (and definitely your health).
I'm a fan of straight through design, the simple is engine doesn't usually have to push as hard to exhaust.

When he brought his car to my shop he showed me the muffler. It was totally plugged.

The tailpipe rust off my son's 97 Swift, and the cheapest route was replacing the whole system at the local muffler shop. Tossed the cat and factory muffler, bought a cheap glasspack and ran 1.75" pipe to the muffler, 2" pipe to the rear. Power increased slightly, MPGs took a dive.
