The headlights on my 1997 LSI HB are fogged bad. I tried to retoring one of them with a turtle wax restoration kit and about an hour of elbow grease without any substantial improvement.

So, I was looking at buying new ones but the ones listed on Rock auto and ebay (@ $130 pair)only show to fit 1998 and up Chevy Metros. They look just like mine so whats the difference?

There are two styles of composite.
One has white plastic and has no blinker incorporated. It goes with the "guppy mouth" bumper, because the blinkers are in the bumper.

The other has black plastic, and an incorporated blinker. The other bumper (I don't know if we've ever chosen a unified nickname for that one :hmm but I've sometimes heard it referred to as gills?) has no blinkers in it.

Another difference is the white plastic kind has a third stabilizing mount underneath; the black kind has no such mount. Only the two standard mount points above.

So will the newer ones fit onto my car and look right? Mine are the white ones I can deal with the extra marker. Also mine has amber corner lens in the headlight and the guppy bumper.

I wet sanded on one of mine for about an hour and it was still brown. I might try it again with the spray on clear instead of the wipeon stuff that came in the kit. Thanks

You'll have to do some wiring. Check this post from z34-5speed: http://geometroforum.com/single/?p=790648&t=5138657

If you can't get the oxidation off with the paper they provide get some coarser grit. You can start at 600 without being too aggressive. Then just step up to finer and finer grits. I recommend some type of power tool or pneumatic die grinder to do the final polishing. I have used a mothers power ball with success.

Used some 400 grit wet sandpaper and a rattle can of acrylic clear I already had laying around in the shop. Worked awesome!!! 15 minutes a light and they are TONS and TONS and TONS better.. Looked so good I couldn't stop and had to do it to my Silverado too. Much better than the junk Turtle Wax kit I wasted my money on..

If you're gonna do a headlight restoration kit, use the 3M kit. There is none better.
