Okay I have a quick question. First off I have a 1993 four door hatch back 5 speed. When I did my rebuild about 6 months ago I forgot to replace or clean the oxygen sensor and it looks to be slap covered with buildup. I still get around 45 mpg and no codes. Is the sensor really needed? Before the rebuild I was burning about a quart every 200 miles this went on four 3 months before I had enough money to buy what I needed for the rebuild. |

No code? I wouldn't worry about it, especially if you're getting those kind of mpg's |

a bad 02 sensor doesnt always throw a code. o2 sensor is cheap.......it may bring you up to 50 mpg, it may change nothing. |

02 sensor is necessary. It's how the computer reads your A/F R and adjusts fuel input accordingly to maintain proper A/F R. Now, do you need a new one? Maybe, maybe not. Like pointed out above, bad sensors don't always throw codes. Sometimes you can feel your acceleration "bucking" at low speed, part throttle, and that indicates a bad sensor. Sometimes not. It really varies car to car, and driver to driver. Even on identical cars, the results are not always the same. However, no new sensor ever hurt anything. So if for nothing more than peace of mind, replacing it could never be a bad idea. Just depends on if you want to spend the money or not.

The two-wire ones are cheap, and when I replaced mine I got a HUGE MPG increase, even though the old one wasn't throwing a code. |

I haven't ran a o2 sensor for 3 years but I do monitor afr with a wide band to set it up on a load based open loop system, otherwise get another o2 sensor, they're cheap. |

He's saying he's running some kind of custom fuel control. For you, your car is stock, and needs an 02 sensor. Unless you're gonna follow his lead and go custom yourself. |

I use an Apexi Safc air/fuel controller with an aftermarket FPR (ebay). Properly set up it will keep your afr at any ratio you want at any rpm and load. It only does afr not timing, I wish it did. One day I will get a piggyback ecu or try a stand alone megasquirt. It keeps my afr correct even with a turbo. |
