ive been rebuilding this engine for a 95 model metro for quite some time now, i finnaly got it installed and drove it around, but the rad fan stays on constantly due to p/o mechanic that cut the wires off. heres what i got to deal with. The p/o had a "head gasket replaced by a mechanic, when i got to look at it, the mechanic actually swapped the engine out with a 91 model, so i have no idea if it even has a fan switch or whatnot. any leads?

95 is a bastard year. The ect sensor feeds the ecm and the ecm controls the fan relay if I am not mistaken. This should be the ect and wiring at the thermostat housing. Fix this and your fan will likely work fine.

Is the fan switch the same as a say 91 style? Closed loop and then opens the circut or is it open and then closes at temp

It closes at temp...completing the circuit. ..

I do not think it has a switch. The ecm controls the relay based on information from the ect sensor. That is the ect sensor in your housing with no plug on it. On a 95 anyway. Actually the 95 FSM seems to give conflicting information. It says the temp gauge sender is at the thermostat housing and I know that is not right. It is in the rear of the intake manifold above the alternator on a 95 model of which used to be ac related on earlier models at that location. I have owned 3 95 models and every single one of them were wired the same as to what was at the thermostat housing as well as the temp gauge sender being in the intake above the alternator. I suspect 96 indeed did change.

Ok, so this problem is getting weirder every time i try and solve this, i can hook up all the wires, and the cel stays on, and the rad fan does not shut off, the car runs and drives but sluggishly, if i take the main sensor wire, not the ground wire, and touch it to the insulated radiator hose clamp, the car idles high, but runs down the road with power, but on full throttle it cuts out. Its very very hard to cold start the car either way, but the cel goes off when you touch it to the insulated clamp. i just cannot figure this out for the life of me. Ive tried everything i could think of to solve this, the only other thing i can think of is that the ecm just might be fried, but why? Anyone got any ideas? anyone wanna help out with this one?

My idea is the sensor you have plugged into the thermostat housing is for the 91 model instead of a 95 model or your not using the correct wires to the sensor. Are the color wires you are plugging into your sensor the same color as in the picture I provided above? light green with a black stripe and a grey with a white stripe wires?

Yes. I just plugged them wires into a 91 style ect i pulled off a t/b from my parts and the fan shut off, odd. so i drilled and tapped a thermostat housing, and screwed it in, dont know if its gonna do anything different or help my issues but we shall see, car is cooling off, so i can cold start it

the yellow fan switch was on the car previously, kept causing it to overheat cuz the previous mechanic clipped wires and shit. aka older style engine he swapped in and didnt keep the 95 stuff
