Has anyone installed a relay to stop starter clicking?

Your car started normally when it was new, so obviously something has deteriorated or changed. This means that it is fixable, and your car can once again start normally with the ignition key and factory circuits. Personally, I would fix it right, but I understand your frustration and I hope that your relay circuit gets you back on the road.

Luckily, I have a back-up plan...Posted Image

check the ground on the transmission and the one against the back of the firewall by the throttle body.can cause a low amp condition.when my starter started doing that i did that and it helped my my starter was going bad.ended up taking it apart and cleaning the commuter with 600 grit sandpaper and then took the brushes and filed them flat and cleaned the com on that side as well.started like a brand new starter.most people don't realize that bad contacts can cause a starter to act like its bad

I've done just this, and so far it has worked! Starter even sounds like new. Grounds are like over-kill status beefed up. All connections are free of corrosion, electrical taped, and dielectric greased. Brushes filed flat. Starter guts brake cleaned, and light sanded on like 600 grit. All contact points and moving parts greased lightly. The tab on the solenoid coming from the ignition switch... I'd like to replace if it starts giving problems. I'd even replace the entire wire, beefed up. Not too sure about the relay.

Anyway, terry8750 thanks for this info! it worked like a charm! I'm amazed of how it cranks for 0.02 seconds and starts right up!

Ps.. oh wow I just noticed you had also used 600 grit, it was the first piece of sandpaper I grabbed from the bunch. :cheers

If anyone has replaced the 12v positive to the starter with a relay kit to fix a clicking starter then the problem is your positive cable to the starter. The way the starters on this car works is the starter has 12v + to the battery at all times and the smaller wire is from the ign switch and that is what "tells " the starter to turn. If you turn your key and the starter clicks then you know your ign switch circuit is good. If you have properly tested grounds and found them to be good the last possible solution is the 12v supply to the starter. You can easily test the voltage drop a crossed this wire and I'm sure you will find you are getting 11v or less there. Simple answer is, replace th e positive lead to the starter. Test, don't guess. Someone even said they touched a 12v + directly from the battery to the starter and it worked.

How about the brushes inside the starter and the solenoid contacts?
