I was at Pick n Pull today picking up some stuff and came across a 95 3/5 that had a gauge cluster in it that had a tach. I have a 96 3/5 that I would like to put it in. I went ahead bought the cluster, but I wanted to check with GMF and see if there are any reasons that this will not be compatible or if there is anything I need to do to make it work before I make the swap. Obviously, I have my fingers crossed that it is plug n play... |

It should be plug and play. Only time the tach wont be correct is if you got it from a 4 cylinder car. It would still work just not read correctly. |

Thanks. I did not know if the harness was prewired or not. |

Yep, it's good to go. The only thing you might run into is the warning lights are different in different years. |

95 and 96 should be the same. Good chance both clusters use the same plug. |

I picked a 3cyl tach from a 96. Plugged in and works perfect in my 94. Just make sure you have lights in the applicable spots. Good to go. |

1st gen is a different shape and will not fit or work as far as we know. I forget which year switched to the rounded top gauge cluster, but all of them are plug and play, only some of the warning lights are different. I believe all of the important stuff is the same but some accessories changed. |

that wikipedia descriptor of gen 1, gen2, etc. is a bogus set of terms. you are much better off using the system which denotes the actual changes made to model range. mk1 = 85 thru 88, mk2 = 89 thru 91, mk3 = 92 thru 94, mk4 = 95 thru 97, and mk5 = 98 thru 01. that description works to separate the cars by model range and helps to tell which clusters will work in what year car. on the newer models, the tach's drive signal changed in 98 when the 1.3 cars' ignition system changed from a single coil to a distributorless coil on/ near plug type. g10 cars remained a single coil/ distributor type so that the tach calibration stayed the same as the previous model years. as far as other parts, the mk4 and mk5 cars shared a bunch of parts and can sometimes be referred to as mk4/5. that system of describing the model year range is applicable to north american domestic market cars as the world market suzuki variants continued with the sf413 chassis and most changes being made to accessories and body styling. |
