Wire an alternator; Large alt. wires are different

Here is the story skip to picture for less reading. I acquired a large alternator out of a 1994 Chrysler siebring convertable. I originally had this alternator installed after modifying brackets and alternator. Then I found out it was not charging, it has 2 prongs on the back and the stok metro has 3 plugs.

How do I get this to work with the metro--

Here you see 2 prongs in the plug-

Here is the geo that has 3 plugs--

Here is the alternators side by side, I assume that the larger one is a higher amp than the geo one. I would do the CS-144 but that's a price this alt was free. If any one can point me or help me wire up this alt that would be great. Do not forget I'm color blind

I'm not sure you can. Different groove count on the Sebring alternator for the belt as well. I can see the belt skipping all over the place. Plus is the amperage different on the Sebring alternator??

I'm no expert, but I'm sure others will weigh in.

I don't know that specific alternator, but I would assume that you need to find out which wire excites the field and the hook it up to your key power with the appropriate resistor. When I do the cs 144 I use an idiot light for the resistor. The light comes on when the key is on and the alt is not yet charging, but goes out once it starts charging. If you guess and try each wire, you can screw up the alternator. It may be different on that alt, so caveat emptor.

I already had it Hooked up and running, but then I unplugged the battery after some trouble shooting and the car died. I was told because I can't just plug an play. 2 prong 3 prong even tho the stock plug fits it won't work....missing some element

Here is a good chance to educate yourself. Couple hours studying this document and you will know more about alternators than 95% of the people on this forum.

Old man, that was a nice link. I learned some stuff from it. The wiring diagram was nice too...

Your problem might be that Chrysler often regulates the alternator with the PCM - if that's the case, unless you install an external voltage regulator on that alternator, it won't charge properly.

Did you get the plug off of the chrysler? for the wire colors. That alternator should have an internal regulator.

Old man! That was the best pice of reading ever, I read it word for word I will study that 32 page pice over and over. I think the large alt needs a regulator...It may even be the wrong phase idk....

IDK....I'm not that good with electricity. However:

After I read it I came up with the idea that the missing hookup on your new alternator is nothing more than a missing direct ground hookup to the idiot light on the dash.

Look at the 3rd pic in the article. the post that is missing on your new alternator is post "L" and all it does is going thru the idiot light and then to the line from post "S".

Double Check me and let me know............

Yea it appears that it may be missing L (according to the page 3 diagram) the ground warning lamp. So is it possible to fake this alternator out and make it work? I may just need to sell that alt or use it as a core and buy the CS-144.

Considering what it might screw up, if you aren't exactly sure about what you are doing I would sell it and purchase one I am sure about.-----Not being "on site" its kinda hard to evaluate, especially since I am not much of an 'electrical guy' to begin with.

Does seem pretty simple tho. -- B=one wire feeding the battery -- S=checking the amount of feed -- IG=ignition -- and L=idiot light and wired coming off of S

You may be right OM. That's why this project has kinda sat on the shelf because I have no idea about it. Guess I'll get a diffrent alt some place. I know T3 posted on what alternators come with CS 130s so guess it's junk yard time.

damn too bad it was awhile ago,the reason it won't charge is because that light provide resistace to turn the alternator charging circut on,had this problem myself just meed to wire a resistor inline with the light terminal or a small light. did that to my truck and i works fine . again sorry its to late i just found your repair forum.
