95 Hatch alignment issue

I have a 95 hatchback, last week I got a newer hatch from a 97 & put it on & now I have a big misalignment issue. It seems the bottom of the hatch is hitting this bumper rubber strip that sticks up about 3/4". It seems to me my rear bumper should come in closer to the body by about 1/4" or so, because there is a 1/4" gap now around the taillight area & going up the hatch a foot or so. Is there any type of adjustment to the rear bumper? I even took out the weatherstrip & the latch & it still just hits that bumper strip-no change at all. Any ideas? Thanks...

Been rear ended? Pics are likely to be the most useful. I don't remember there being any real adjustment for the bumper, it just bolted on. There should be some adjustment in where the hinges bolt on.

Well I ended up taking the bumper off & I notice that most of the bumper cover screws were way loose that screwed into the bumper crash bar. Also every other screw seems loose too! So while my bumper is off I'm going to bet some SEM bumper paint & re-do it. I'll get back later & see how everything lines up...

***Oh I did look at where the hatch hinges bolt on, & on the hatch hinge there is a stud on each that just drops thru the hole in the body & then you tighten up the 12mm nut & thats it-no adjustment I see. It's amazing that Suzuki used so many of those large screws all over the car instead of bolts!

REAR ENDED-INDEED!!! Well after looking at a few other hatchbacks in the yards & taking off the trunk wetherstip & latch on all of em & studying them closely-they all still closed fine w/a perfect gap. I went back home & studied mine some more & it seems it was hit & repaired & painted, hard to tell of the damage. It does close but there is the humongous gap(stick your thumb in it!!!), so it got bowed-even the 2 little rubber bumpers have an inch of space-they don't even contact the metal. So it's off to find a another hatch-this time I know what to look for before I buy it!
