Some dork pulled in front me today, found out tires with 55psi do not stop real well.Even being able to drive home I am pretty sure insurance will total it.Was wondering what you guys get from the insurance company for a total on these, 97 3 cly, 5 spd, stock faded paint 150,000 and no rust

It was great seeing the guy I hit having to be towed.

If they total it be sure to buy it back from them and if you can, fix it or part it out and make a few more $$.

I got $550 for a 90 model 2 years ago which was more than I expected since the property taxed value is $325. I paid $75 to buy it back, put a new hatch on it and still drive it.

Gather up a half dozen ads from dealers in your region of similar age/mileage metros. Those should help support a higher settlement price. Good Luck!

the insurance biz these days doesn't allow much room for an adjuster to go up.

when the guy settled up with me it was pretty much right there on his laptop's screen. he made 2 phone calls to check on availability of some body panels and bumper covers, hit the print button, and it spit out a check.

i went by a few body shops to see what it would cost to repair a light hit in the ass and the $2100 they quoted was $400 more than the trigger that would call it a total loss.

in ohio if you let the insurance guy total the car and buy the car back, they issue a special title for the transfer of ownership but you can't put the car back on the road until repairs are made, you have the state inspect the car, and they issue a rebuild title. from then on the title will show that the car was totaled and rebuilt.

if you negotiate with the adjuster to not total the car you might be able to fix it and maintain the value of the car.

it depends on the damage and your dedication to the car on which way you might want to go.

Or you could do what I did. They told me they were going to total it and told me the amount would get in compensation. In return I handed them a piece of paper stating the amount I was suing them for and *poof* like magic my car was quickly fixed and all better. Whadya make of that? :hmm :evillol

Both early 90s cars I had they were "totaled" but drivable still (91 Corolla, 93 Escort), I took about $300 less insurance payout and kept the cars. The way it was done in Arkansas, the insurance companies don't technically even BUY The car for me to buy back. The cars kept a clear titles. The insurance company just payed me with check with a deduction noted for me keeping the cars. Anyhow I got about $1300-1400 layout after what the insurance companies kept.

So that might be a "buyer beware" notice for cars from Arkansas. They could be "totaled" but still have clear titles. The Corolla ended up being a trade-in (probably went to salvage) and the Escort ended up in a salvage yard about 8 months later anyway.
