Ok, so I have read alot and seen alot on intakes. Some cold, some warm. What should I do to mine? Im going for mpg's but trying to keep the performance of my 4cyl. Right now its stock with standard filter. I did cover a hole on the under side of the tubing. More cold I was guessing. What do you guys recommend? Also I was wondering if a larger muffler and pipe would allow my engine to exhale easier. Any thoughts or proof on that? I will say that so far im gald to have found you guys. It only took me buying a metro to realize what I should have known all along......F*CK YOUR PRIUS!!!!! :-) |

Cold is better for performance, hot is better for mileage, especially in winter. Neither is going to make a very big difference either way. Same with exhaust, might add 2 HP at high RPM and wide open throttle, but any other time it will do nothing. |

thanks woodie, so you would say cold in warm weather and move to warm for cold temps. in ohio that means changing the intake setup every day or so lol. thanks though! |

For improving your fuel economy, get an Ultra-Gauge. No modifications are required. It's mostly how you drive. You'll get the most benefit from aerodynamic modifications. I do not have any aerodynamic modifications on either of my cars. http://www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/ Here's my fuelly banner. 1996 4 cylinder with a 3.52. The 53 MPG top tank is with a 4.39 transmission installed, so that kinda blows the better gas mileage with the "XFI" transmission theory. Not that it doesn't make it easier if that just happens to be the right ratio for your driving style and topography. ![]() There's a piece missing from your intake system. It's not going to affect your performance in any way if you don't have it installed. Just so you'll know what is is that's missing and what it looks like, here's a picture. I had to put a couple of nylon cable ties on mine to keep it in place. ![]() |

Those plastic parts are pretty much for looks? They have names and part numbers, but their function is not critical to operation. Makes my car look "unmolested" in the pictures. Basically, they don't do anything. Ultra-gauge for sure.

That plastic housing which looks as if it could be a turbocharger is a resonance chamber. It does something for the sound of the intake air. Pretty meaningless actually, but if it's missing you're going to be drawing warmer air from under the hood. Some folks remove the ribbed bellows tube during the winter to get some warmer air in there to improve the mixing of the air/fuel charge. Theoretically better for mileage, but in reality a very small difference. If you're going over 30 mph, there is so much fresh air rushing in that the under hood air temperature isn't much higher than the outside air temperature. |

I covered the hole so for now I guess its ok. I hook the ultragauge up to the obII port. Is that the only connection? It says it will give me a tach, how good is it? Functional? |
