I'm looking for atf fluid for a 97 tuarus trans. Trans code is L. The dip stick has only Mercon on it. I know I shouldn't use mercon V since it is not compatible with the trans. There is a Mercon SP ATf that I found for really cheap but is it comaptible for my trans. I need 18 quarts for the trans so if it is it would a save me a bunch on money. Looked briefly but didn't see much about the mercon sp. |

Any mercon should work just fine , or use universal atf. that trans doesn't hold more than 13.4 quarts. |

dex/merc will work. It covers all 1988 and later fords (exept those requiring type F,Mercon V,SP or LV. at least that is what it says on back of valvoiline bottle.

18 quarts?????????? Heck, you ain't servicing a dump truck. Better look at the shop manual again. There should be a taurus.com website somewhere on the interweb which extolls the virtue of the correct ATF for your particular application. I had a Ford Focus and found a focus website which met my every need on my focus. |

It had instructions on the best way to burn it? Sorry, don't like Fords much and couldn't resist.

You CANNOT use Mercon SP in your trans - it is not compatible. You can, however, use Mercon/Dexron 3 fluid. Don't use Dexron 6 - it's not really compatible and has less friction modifiers. |

Yes it shows on a ford website that that trans uses mercon / dextron lll. |

Yes I realize it probably doesn't hold that much. I need to flush some of the old fluid out when I install it in the wife's van. Found a 97 Taurus at a pull a part with only 54,000 miles on it. Everything else had 125,000 to 200,000 on it. Should have the on out of the van this week if everything works out. |
