so i have noticed that the trunk and the rear passengers floor board get pretty wet when it rains. trunk looks like both sides are "leaking" and i have no idea about the floor board. its my DD so im not super keen to yank the whole carpet out but fear i may have to. anyone with my model or similar have this issue? my seal in the trunk looks good for its age.

Not gonna like this answer... :rad

Start with the carpet, Probably not going to see anything unless the wheel wells have rusted through and there is a big rust trace from there. :O

Nope?

Pull the rear seat back (might get away with leaving it in a sedan, it's necessary in a hatch to be able to pull the plastics) and then the rear plastics or whatever covers the sides in the trunk. :spaz Yep, gotta be done. :'(

Anything obvious? Rust holes in the wheel wells? Rust trace anywhere? :-/

No rust trace might be the trunk seal. Climb in with a light while someone outside sprays it with water. It might take a while.

If it's from the trunk seal, fix it. :thumb

If it's from some mystery area in the quarters... :shit

The problem is there are several ways into the quarter panel. The back window, the side windows, up from the wheel wells, and here is a surprise, there is a body seam under the trim strip on the roof. Start with a close inspection of the wheel well and anywhere it could be coming from below the car. Seal up any holes or possible leak locations. If that doesn't fix it the best way to figure out which area is allowing water into your trunk from above is to use food coloring at the places where the leak is possible. Drip a bit of food coloring where you think it might be, add water, and watch. Did it show up? No, then grab a different color and try the next spot. When you find it use seam sealer or window weld or something similar. Silicone will only be a temporary fix. ^o)

:ahh
Sorry.

Just might be a reason I listed that first... well that and it is the first thing exposed.

I'd guess this is a Gen2 isn't it? The windows in the back fold out don't they? My bet is that's your issue with the trunk leaking thing. The seals on mine are iffy so they leak occasionally. Nothing big, though.

I'm having the same problem. Except the moisture is getting in the front. I've checked under the carpet on the front floor pans three times in the past couple months and it's always damp. I'm just glad I've undercoated the metal to slow down any corrosion that could set in. I'll probably pull the carpet out, and drive it like that for a while until I can pinpoint where the moisture is getting in. And seal the absolute shite out of it.

Here is several places for you guys who have wet floor carpet to check out:
http://geometroforum.com/topic/4586498/1/

I'd check under the black plastic grill at the base of the hood...see if I could spot any debris blocking the drainage---even if that is draining properly it runs down the sheetmetal under the inner fender and runs over a 2 1/2 inch hole that is filled with a rubber grommet If the rubber grommet is dried out and cracked (its 20+ years old) the water runs down the inside of the kick panel into the drivers or passengers compartment.----easy job to pull the plastic inner fender and check

From his information panel it's a 96 4 door, so gen 3 and windows roll down, not pop out. Kinda got me too as I wrote it up as a hatch and then rechecked the information and had to alter for a 4 door.

A '96 that still had rear wheel wells would be a rare bird indeed. My '98 was showing some fair sized holes ten years ago.

Depending on area, of course.
You'd be hard-pressed to find a rotted out '96 around here - and if you did? It came here from somewhere else. ^o)
