I gave it a closer inspection today, it's worse than I thought. The rest of the car is pretty solid, but there is a hole in the LH inner rear wheeltub I can almost fit my fist in, lol. I literally am looking at the interior plastic. The outer tub and quarter skin are solid, so at least I have something to weld to. I don't have the time to yank the rear interior out right now ( necessary if you don't want a fire), so I'm going to cut a patch from a rubbermaid storage container lid and glue it on with windshield urethane adhesive.

It's odd,my frame horns are perfect, they look just like they came off the assembly line, the body only has a few bubbles in the door bottoms/rockers, yet my inner wheeltubs are TOAST.

That's not uncommon at all. I think that's the part that GM designed when they redid it for '95.

What gets me is you never see rust on verticle surfaces unless there is something that holds moisture from the backside or something like that . The 97 wheelwells seem to rust for no reason. Maybe the factory robots didn't coat them well, dunno

Do it Yourselfer

I got my metro this year. It is a 91 4 door hatch and i had the same issue. I also had over 40 pounds of rocks under my carpet. I ripped out the carpet and found the metal attatching my floor to the frames had rusted away down both sides the entire way. I fixed mine by removing rust, applying very thin metal used in ductwork. then attatched that with 1/8 inch self tapping sheet metal screws. after patching it i coated the area with 3m fireblock foam and im not water free. i plan to put a top and bottom coat of flex seal before i put in new carpet.
