Air bag issue molested Metro HELP!; Air bag plug cut off on air bag side wires

Just another wrench.

Greetings all,

Wonderful day today. I started my upgrade for intermittent wipers, a new ignition switch, and a "new" steering wheel. OMG :die , I hate previous owners. I hate them very much. :banghead

P.O. mystery has been left to me. It seems my 1998 Metro 3/5 hatchback has been totally f'ing molested. It seems that there has been an air bag deployment (no major damage to vehicle) and the previous owner installed a junk yard air bag that had had the factory plug cut off, leaving 2 wires. Does anyone know about air bag deployment in these vehicles? If the air bag deployed, has the air bag sensor been permanently damaged or set to deploy the air bag, or can I reattach the air bag safely to the sensor without deployment of my air bag?

I am in a world of steaming :shit and need information.

I have a great amount of respect for any amount of explosive detonating in my face. In case you do not know, air bag deployment is done with an explosive device.

Anyone with experience with air bags, your knowledge will be appreciated.

What did this f'ing crack monkey do to my car??? Why me? B-)

Is the airbag light on? It should be without a bag hooked up

And there shouldn't be 12volts on the wires, just possibly a small trace voltage to verify a bag is present.

Sir Metrologist

DO NOT PROBE YOUR AIRBAG WIRES!!!!!!!! :O
PLEASE read the section on air bags in the FSM, and ONLY the FSM!
There is a large part about repairing the system after deployment. Also it walks your through air bag repair. Read every page, then jump in. :news

It's not hard, but any repairs need to be done a specific way, or you risk deployment. :oshit

I wasn't saying the airbag wires, I was referring to the wires from the car. If there is voltage on them, then the system is trying to deploy. :x

No airbag light. I will be studying the FSM. Wires cut and not attached on the Bag side. I will not attach wires until I am sure it will not deploy.

Fix the light first, especially if it doesn't light when the key is turned on.

My wife is not concerned about her air bag light being on. We have not had the money to repair it at a dealer. I am of no help, however...

Wait...
So the wires from the AIRBAG are cut... but not the ones coming from the CAR?

If that's the case... go to the junkyard and buy a new airbag. Plug it in to your un-cut wires. Problem solved...

Although, like MMM said - does the Air Bag light flash when you turn the car on? It should flash, IIRC, 7 times. If you don't see the light on start-up, the bulb has burnt out - or been removed by the PO. :O
