This is my loyal 96 that I bought brand new. It has lots of parking lot dings, but never a wreck before this. A young man on a bicycle darted across a busy 4 lane city street that was stopped with traffic, but he did not see that my lane was not stopped. He hit my front left wheel and went over his handlebars into my windshield while I was doing about 15 mph. The cops said he was old enough to know better. Hopefully he will be OK, he went off in an ambulance.![]() ![]() The hood got some pedals or handlebars or something. ![]() This car is a workhorse, so no time to waste! ![]() I called my glass supplier immediately and ordered my windshield and had my tint guy do the fat tint strip up on top that I use on all my Metros. This way it would be ready the same day. While I waited, I went ahead and fixed my roof. ![]() ![]() I got a Taiwan fender and bolted it on. It's just the black coating that comes on the new fender, not even painted. I rattle canned the roof repair with rattle primer and rattle black, trying to get the black to look kinda shitty so that it might blend into the rest of the shitty paint. The driver mirror is from Pick n Pull, as well as the windshield pillar moldings that go all the way up over the roof. This Metro had a long day getting smashed and then repaired, so I gave her a bath for the first time in a few months before driving her home.

Yea, it is amazing to me too. All that damage on the windshield and roof is from his head and body. It was a mountain bike, you can see his tire marks on my door.

I have to say that I really would feel bad if this happened to somebody who worked in an office. We all know that all it takes is a fender or tail light to total one of these cars, so if a guy did not have an environment to fix something like this, it would be gone. There is no way that a new windshield would have fit with out straightening the roof, and a body shop would have charged big money to fix that. |

Thanks. Neither the guy on the bike or me, or my Metro were "lucky", but we are all lucky it was not worse. |

I wanna see more pics of the finished paint job. Are you going to rattle can it or do a more professional job? If a rattle can, please post lots of pics of the entire process. I've gotta do my entire whip. The paint has faded down to the primer coat and soon it will be down to bare metal. |

This car is a work horse, so no time to make her pretty. Here is a pic of how I made the rattle can look as shitty as possible. If I had more time on that one, I might have done the whole roof, but this was just a rapid repair so that I could get my windshield in the same day. I got lucky having a black car, since the new fender came black. Not the best match in the world, but it will do for now. I would love to make this Metro pretty like the other ones, maybe one day...

Dayle, if you are into paint, I painted the wheels way back in the late 1990s with solvent based PPG, and they still look really good. The recipe for that color was just coarse aluminum. no other colors, just that one toner, and then top coat with PPG clear. |

As previously mentioned, I'm glad it wasn't worse. Man I wish I lived closer! I'd love to see the process in action. Pretty amazing same day results in my book. I've got a workhorse 96 that my daughter drives, she got t-boned and I have yet to start on that project... Edited by idmetro, May 5 2014, 05:26 PM.

It saddens me a bit that you just gave it such a quickie fix and no love on the paint. You brag about it all the time; how it got it new, it hasn't let you down, etc, etc. You paint the 3 electrics so prettily; but no love for your oldest (as in you have had it the longest) Metro friend? ![]() I mean, even "budget" paint like you're doing on the '93, "black" like its "white"... |

You are the body man that I was going to refer you to. He insured? You do a good shit paint job, it looks shitty. jkActually, you make a shit paint job look right. But you did get me to thinking of a carbon fiber stick-on roof and hood on a sun faded black Metro.
