I once compared a replacement from a non convertible, and found out that the wiring harness and fuse block connectors from my "made in Japan" 91 Vert were different than a 91 Hatch made in Canada. You may want to PM Geostalker and ask him if either of the two Verts he recently picked might have one. I don't remember the exact years they were, other than they were newer than My '91. Did it recently fail? What's it doing (or not doing)? Mine started acting up irregularly soon after I bought my Vert that had been sitting for a few years. I had been spraying electrical contact cleaner in it pretty much every day for a few weeks and cycled the switch from left/right/low beams/brights, and in a rare stroke of luck it started working fine the day after I discovered the replacement one wasn't plug and play, and has worked fine ever since with regular use. Why is it different than the regular Metro ? Is because of the airbag ? Ken........... |

It was explained to me that the best theory was because some of the wiring was different on the cars made in Japan (all Verts) vs. the ones made in Canada (all others). The one I checked had the same dash style, don't know if all 91 Hatches came with an or not, or whether that harness had anything to do with the airbag on either one.

it's not a difference between japanese cars and cars from other markets. the sf413 chassis is a world market variant and what fits one car fits all the others. the difference is that it's a vert. the geo vert was a north american market variant sf413 and to get a ragtop through the insurance consortium they were required to have the airbag. the airbag (sir system) required a clockspring to deal with the wiring so the steering column and controls were redesigned to accomodate the clockspring and the air bag. comparing the vert and a hatchback you will see that the verts' steering column is shorter, the plastic trim surrounding the combination switch is much different, and while the combination switch for the 3 door attaches with 4 screws to the ignition switch assembly at the end of the column while the vert uses 3 screws. the ignition switch mechanism is also different from a hatchback's. the combination switch for a 3 door uses a spring mounted wiper contact for the horn while the verts' horn wiring runs through the clockspring. there's no difference with the fuse block connections or connectors as long as you use wiring in keeping with the model year range. i mix wiring parts when i remove the airbag wheel and install custom steering wheels so i'm very sure about this. i complete remove the clockspring and it's wiring and substitute modified hatchback wiring to get back to a wiper/ contact ring setup. it's a matter of urban legend that there are many differences among sf413 variants assembled in various countries. you can bolt parts from any of the variants on any other variant. that's how we gt-ize verts or use australian, asian, european parts on north american market cars. my red vert was built in japan for the north american domestic market but it had all the mounting holes in place to bolt european e code glass swift headlights right on. my blue vert was built in japan for the north american domestic market and i bolted on glass headlights from new zealand, no problem. i spent a lot of time in junk yards swapping parts from this car and that car to figure out which parts would fit which cars. as long as you stay within model year ranges, 89 thru 91, 92 thru 94, 95 thru 97, and 98 thru 2000, you can swap parts to your heart's content.
