These speakers are actually pretty good. I have my bass lowered all the way on my head unit, as well as the treble turned up. So I don't have a lot of distortion coming out of these. They sound very good at high volume with my set up. I can vouch for that.

Great write up though. I came here because I thought it was a question haha.

Yes, unless you have a sedan, the rear shelf speakers might be 6x9 in a sedan... but I don't remember! :dunno
TurboEF has a sedan, maybe he will chime in, just so we know... :hmm
But for a hatchback, YES - 6.5" speakers for both front and rear locations. ^o)

sedan have 6.5 all around. i used the same ones in the front for mine. though after a while i got some passive crossovers to block the bass from going to them. they sound amazing now, crisp highs clear mids. the back are these

here are the crossovers i took them out of old house speakers

just remember that the ones in front have way less clearance than the back cause of the window. the blue pyles fit fine there. for the back unless your going all out, i recommend the ones i got. they have crazy good bass. not earth shattering, but enough that no matter what you listen to you'll hear it and it will sound good.

Do the factory plastic grilles in the hatches not pop out from the entire interior panel as they do in other cars? I JUST picked up a '97 the other weekend and besides getting it back on the road(fuel pump) this is the next thing on the list as far as replacement parts. If so, will 6.5" speakers not wiggle through that hole? Or if need be... well, no, because a bracket for 5.25" will still be the 6.5". I guess a little extra work in taking all of that rear interior apart will be worth it. Now, the other question is, does anyone have a link to the amount of sound deadening needed to cover the entire interior from firewall to rear hatch and port>starboard sides of this little thing?

No, the grills do not pop out.
Front door grills are secured with 4 screws from the back side. Rear side grills are molded into the side panels, and are completely non-removable (unless you plan to cut. Ick.)
