When you get ready to take the steering wheel off, don't remove the nut. Leave it on but loose. Wiggle the wheel while pulling up. When the wheel comes up, the nut will keep you from hitting yourself in the face. |

Clean the insides of the vent tubes and reseal with new foam. If you need to replace the vent fin assemblies, now is the time to do it, because they bolt in from the back. |

I would think, pull dash, paint it, clean and reassemble vent tubes, Tach Cluster with LED's (if you don't have one already installed), make sure everything behind dash is dry, especially the pad on the firewall, or it will get musty smelling. Maybe a rear strut (& front) tower brace while the plastic is out. Maybe upgrade the seats. Thanks all I can think of... |

Holy crap, what an elegant solution, simple common sense. Where were you thirty years ago? Maybe my nose wouldn't look like this. faygoninja: Don't worry about anything to do with the instrument cluster, you can do that anytime. The cluster pops out in about 15 minutes once you've done it. Concentrate on the dash and heating/cooling ducts and vents. |

BUT, (and I thought this before because I knew I didn't unscrew the vents from behind and I was pretty confident I didn't paint the vent surrounds in place) the front portion of the vents pop out from the front. They use tabs to hold them in. Just removed a set on a dash I have to experiment on and 2 of the 3 came out with no issues. The 3rd broke both tabs off along with a bit of plastic. Once the front covers are off the vent fins are accessible. Also if you don't mind them a little sloppy, I repaired my original fins with push pins. Use ones with a head small enough to fit through the hole on the piece that links the fins. Bend the end to 90 degrees, heat the end until it's hot enough it will melt into the plastic and push it into the fin where the tiny peg broke off. Might try a little epoxy to build it up to the same size as the peg was originally. |

That's what I thought when I first read it. Ah, 30 years ago - I was about to embark on one of the greatest school years of my life in New Mexico. Other than some blurry memories, not much else to show for it. So boys and girls, study hard, get good grades. Now I have to survive on my wit, charm and good looks which thanks to the nut on the steering wheel, I've kept. That and my great humility. I'm always happy to give credit where credit is due, but I just can't quite put my finger on who to give credit to...

After a 2nd look, the center vent has a bunch of little tabs and a few of them possibly bit the dust as well. Didn't have the little pieces fall out that I saw, so they may have already been broken off. |

If you are gonna pull the dash why not replace it with one from a newer year Metro? There are quite a few at the Pull-a-Parts up in the Cleveland area. The later model ones are made of better materials and look better than the old ones. I'm saying goodbye to my 98 3/5 hatch and the dash is great and the vents are all good. |
