Anyone remember this ? Posted Image

Those fender flares weren't for looks. They sucked the air out of the wheel well for aerodynamic effect and to reduce drag.... Perhaps in a metro this mod could increase mpgs?
I assume you mean those scoops on the front fenders.
Everything I have read about those Fender scoops is that they are there for tire clearance while cornering.

From Wikipedia:

Quote:

The rear-facing fender scoops were to hide cut outs in the hood. These cutouts were thought to allow wheel clearance due to the lowered height of the car for NASCAR, but in reality the NASCAR tire was wider than the cutout and the scoop itself. Therefore there was no room for tire clearance. The scoop were actually for ventilating trapped air from the wheel wells in order to facilitate reduced under fender air pressure and lift.

I read that on wikipedia. One of the worst places to get information.
Look on other sites instead.

ive found wikipedia to be quite accurate over the years...actually i showed this article to my dad and he said he remembers reading that in a NASCAR article...those little things are why the Superbird was banned because of being "too fast" back in the day! also why we love that car so much.

The Superbird and others were not banned at all.

IIRC studies were performed that showed wikipedia was just as accurate as say Britannica. ie same relative percentage of "mistakes" were found in both.

and amazingly its easy to fix. YOU CAN EDIT IT when you find an error.

and a good proper wikipedia article will have SOURCES for their information which you can then verify or dismiss.

If there is a commercial HVAC company near by you can check with them. Sometimes roof top units come in with the coils wrapped with corrugated plastic. It just goes in the trash. But I have scored sheets that were 4' x 9'. They work good for rc planes and redneck bobsleds too. :-)
