i am looking to see if anyone has done a dual alternator setup for the metro. i am looking into doing a dual alternator setup as i am doing a huge audio setup on my geo and if someone has done it can you provide any help/pics. i am not against removing the ac to do so. i figured i would go to the geo people before doing myself and then asking the car audio people. car audio people do not like the metros that much i have seen.

You can transplant a GM cs alternator on it. thereis a prebuilt kit and not have to run 2 alternators. Cs alternators can be made to produce 200 amps. Dual Alternators can be done gm and ford do them on trucks. With our alternators the most you would get is a little more than 100 amps.

Agree. I have a cs130 on mine. Puts out 110 amps. You can buy the same alternator just in high output version that produces 200 plus amps.

was only thinking dual setup for the system and only getting 200a will be enough for half. how much room until the firewall when doing the cs upgrade?

It fit in about the normal amount of space as the factory alternator. Do a search for cs Alternator on here there have been a few guys do the swap.

I spoke to the guy that owns "The Punisher" and he put an alternator out of a Tahoe in the place of the air conditioner using the air conditioner bracket. He had to grind it down in one spot to get it to work. I'll try to find his thread on it.

that would work as i could then use the stock for the car and the huge one for the stereo i am installing.

The first link in my signature shows the cs144 alt out of a suburban. I believe you can get the cs144 up to 320 amps, check ebay

If you want 2 alternators badly enough, I can build you the mounting kit, but it won't be cheap, and you won't have air conditioning.

got any pics of how close the alt is to the firewall? what would a custom bracket cost approx? not cheap is different to different people.

mick,
i found his caraudio.com thread but it does not say how everything is bolted together. it just shows a grinded off part of the ac bracket. i can see where one bolt will go through but what about the other mount? from what he posted it looked rigged.

There would be no problems with the firewall clearance, but the Alternator that would sit in the factory alternator position would only have about 1/4" clearance to the passenger side frame rail. No problem with clearance on the second alternator that would fill the air conditioner spot. There would be two custom bracket kits and two belts, one for each unit. If you went with the cs 144, I would limit them to 140 amps, or the 4 rib belt will slip on the six rib pulley. I would end up billing a full 8 hour day at northern CA shop rates, and I would have to buy custom length belts to send out with the parts. Wiring would be up to you, but that would probably be better anyway so you could match the wiring to whatever theme you have. If you are interested, pm me.

In this post you can see what the CS130 looks like mounted on the engine outside the car, and also when the engine is installed. Lots of room around it under the hood.

I bought the alternator and mounting kit online and didn't have a bit of trouble mounting it or wiring it up. The new wiring adapter (Geo harness to GM alt socket) and bracket are the keys to making it all work so smoothly.

I thought of mounting it on the front (exhaust) side of the engine, and it wouldn't be hard to adapt the AC bracket, but I had other things to do at the time.

You can get plenty of power from the GM alternator for very little work. It is possible to mount two alternators on the engine if you lose the AC, but it'll take more effort and resources. Your choice!

What RMS wattage are you going to be running?

Stereo is low-powered by the standards of the modern generation, just a 400-watt amp. There will be other equipment, but I have no idea of overall current draw. I just know that I'll never have to worry about enough electrons on hand to do whatever I want to.

A CS130 may be overkill, but there are times when a little overkill is a winning strategy!!
