I am hoping someone can help me. I have a 1992 Metro convertible. When I bought this car it had no parking lights. I replaced fuse # 3 and all was well. Now it blows the fuse as soon as it is replaced. I am not so great with electrical problems and don't know how to start looking for the problem. The owners manual I have with the car is for a 1991 Metro and it says fuse #3 is for parking lights side marker lights license plate light and instrument cluster lights. None of them work at this point. How do I begin to look for the short? The only thing I have done is replace the carpet in the car and I noticed no parking lights or dash lights. |

sounds like a power wire is rubbing against metal which is arcing and blowing the fuse or there is something that is hooked up too wires for marker lights and its drawing too much power which will also blow fuse check out wires first n see use your manual too trace power n other wires n see if anything is cut and is touching metal |

First, are you using the correct rated fuses for that circuit? I would start by removing all the bulbs in the parking lamp sockets and see if the fuse pops with all the bulbs removed. Sometimes a blown bulb can cause a problem. Then reinstall your bulbs one at a time until the short returns. To locate your short you will need to understand the wiring routing for that circuit. Find a point in the circuit about in the middle of the circuit and disconnect it. If the short is still present then you know it is between there and the fuse panel. If the short is not there, then you know it is further down the circuit and cuts your troubleshooting distance down. Better have a good supply of fuses on hand to find a short. I have purchased cycling circuit breakers to install in place of fuses to aid in finding shorts. I have done as well what a lot of other idiots have done and straight wire it at the fuse panel until I seen smoke where the short was. Of course I do not recommend that, just saying, I have done it. Your carpet replacement just might be a hint to where your trouble lies. |

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a 1992 Metro convertible? Fuse #3 is supposed to control parking, side marker, license plate and dash lights. None work as of this point. It also seems to control interior light. |

There is a plug in the harness just below the ecm above the clutch pedal. It is in the corner where the firewall meets the drivers side of the car. Disconnect this plug and you can eliminate all the lights on the back half of the car. The car will not run with this plug disconnected but you can try a new fuse for the lights. If the fuse holds and the dash and the front lights, work pull up the new carpet and take a look. |

Ok got home and disconnected all the exterior lights and the inside light. Fuse still sparked with a jumper wire. Took the whole dash out and it still sparked. Then I sat in the car and started thinking what always has power. I then thought of the constant power wire to the radio. When I repaced the radio that wire did not have power. I took the radio out and that wire must have been grounding to the radio. It now seems to have power to it. Snipped it put tape on it and the fuse does not blow. Thanks to everyone for their help. I just hate electrical problems but all the Geos that I have had were always reliable. It is stupid things like this that make me crazy but now its done and over. I may be a bit crazy but I also have a Fiat 500 Abarth convertible that is a blast to drive but I still like the Metro convertible the best. I get speeding tickets with the Fiat but never in the Metro HA HA. |
