Radio surround 1988 Sprint Metro; Trying to install a stereo

So I've looked all over, and searched and looked in the manual trying to get info on pulling the radio surround out of the 88 I picked up a couple of weeks ago.
There is no radio installed, as far as I can tell there was never a radio installed. There is a blank with what looks like holes with tabs for removal to mount a two knob radio, but no real way as far as I can see to get the piece out. I have a standard 1 din radio I want to install so I need to get it out and cut to finish the install. There are front speakers and an antenna and I can see the harness when I remove the ash tray.
Has anyone else run into this?
Do I have to remove the entire dash?
hoping to do most of this tomorrow as I've got the day off.
Thanks
