Just picked this one up off of craigslist. I have enough Metros to get by, but the price was right. This one is a 2000 3/5 hatch, no A/C. The transmission is screwed up, so it came home on a trailer. It looks like it has had kind of a rough life, but other than the transmission, it just needs some cleaning and a little love. There are 135,xxx on the clock, so there is probably a lot of life left in the motor.![]() This one is joining the 93, the 95, the 96, the 97, the 98, the 99, and the other 2000. Hopefully, she will feel right at home here... |

Are you absolutely sure 7 Metros plus this new one is "enough to get by?"

It has been said by a few people that I have a touch of OCD, so I am painfully aware that there are many metros not represented in my fleet. The 94 is the one that sticks out like a sore thumb, but next would be either a four door 89-94, and of course a vert. I process the purple idea sometimes when I am on craigslist and I see one. |

"Process the purple idea" as in you think about it, try to picture it, and think you may try it someday? Or "process it" more like thinking about what it's like to eat some lettuce washed in an open ditch in some 4th or 5th World Central/South American country, when your digestive system "processes it" and it comes out purple? We have all seen the pictures of your gorgeous workmanship. No way in the world can you ever be accused of having a touch of OCD.

I gave her a quicky outside wash and looked it over a little more closely to see what I bought. Lotsa dings and small dents, passenger side window crank missing, and tire chain damage to the fenders and liners. The cheaply jvc deck was laying in the back seat, and there is a big sony amp under the drivers seat. The headliner looks ok at first glance, but it is only hanging on around the edges. It is just sagging in a way that makes it look a lot better than it is. I feel pretty good about the 600 bucks that I spent, and the handful of minor problems is not really a big deal for that price. I watch craigslist closely, and these 95+ 3/5 hatches are really hard to find. The few that show up start at about 1500, and go up from there.

I wanna own every metro in the world... I think there is a rap song kinda like that, but maybe it wasn't about metros...? I wonder if metros could be like stocks- buy them when they are cheap and plant them in your backyard, then sell them for a grip after the new terrorist state in Iraq drives our gas prices through the roof? I went ahead an swapped the bad transmission with a mystery one that I picked up at pick n pull a few months ago, and the missing 2nd and 3rd gears were in fact the problem. All the gears work now, and I finally got to drive it for the first time since I have only been able to use 1st and reverse to pull it in and out of the shop. Since I did not know if this transmission was even functional, I filled it with the oil that I took out of the bad transmission and some of my last motor oil change. While this transmission is a far cry from being a fresh transmission from David, I think I will go ahead and swap the oil with some fresh synchromesh and live with the transmission as is. 2nd is not as easy to downshift into, but it's really not too bad yet. Just a little delay, and it still goes in. I only drove it around the block, so I am not totally sure yet, butI think I might have a 4.10. I had a clutch on my shelf that I used for a few hundred miles when I first built the Tevie1 electric Metro, and I put it in this car since the edges of the friction disk were worn down flush with the grooves. I had roasted this new clutch a few times before I figured out that it would never hold the kind of torque that Tevie1 has, but it still looked pretty good. I used the pilot and throw out bearing from that clutch as well, since the heavy duty clutch that I put in Tevie1 came with new ones. It does not run as sweet as a happy 1.0 should, so I will look into that pretty soon. It certainly runs fair enough to be a daily driver, but I know what a happy 1.0 should feel like. |

Most are like that, if you know what you're doing you can keep it like that forever. I bought a 2001 Swift with 22K miles on it that was like that when I got it. I traded it in two years later with 100K and it was exactly the same. That's also what the Magnum Metro was like when I sold it with 150K, just a little sluggish downshifting into second. I bought that one with 14 miles on it. |

I swapped a broken transmission for a pick n pull unit a couple of years ago and ended up with one that 1st and 2nd synchros were completely worn out in. I had purchased the 1 year warranty for it, which I did not get around to using until there was only a week left. After that year of driving with toasted synchros, this second gear thing feels luxurious. It may even shift a hair nicer when I swap the used motor oil for some fresh synchromesh... |

Since I've already harassed you in this thread, here's another thought I had, yesterday. You should do a bit of body-work on a Metro, to erase those lines in the doors/rear quarters. The indentations. Theoretically they are there to hold those rubbery bump-stopper things, but you don't seem to use those too often. I wonder what the car would look like without them... And for that matter, it might be worth (a little, but probably not very much at all) MPG. ![]() Just an interesting idea. Of course, can't do it to a car with guppy mouth bumpers; they have a matching line molded in. |

I have eyeballed those indentations as well, and wondered how it would look without them. They do make the sheet metal more rigid, but they would still be that way if they were paved over. The lines that really bug me are the ones that most metro owners have never noticed. The ones around the rear wheel opening, right where the quarter panel makes the "90 degree" bend into the wheel opening. Since I am a perfectionist, I always have to have nice crisp lines in that tiny little detail. It would probably save a lot of time to pave over them.... |
