Oh! Interesting. It's kind of obvious, in retrospect, but I never thought of that. |

It is already promised to gmf member David who builds my transmissions. I owe him a core... |

I just picked up a nearly identical 1998 Chevy Metro today, literally the only difference is the bumper colors. Love these cars! |

I hear a bad sound that sounds like a bearing on the bottom end. Our CA transmission guy, David, put his ear to it and agreed when he was here the other day, so I am going to do a motor swap on her from the other 2000 that I have. The only catch to the whole deal, is that I want to get her through the smog test first so that I can do the dreaded dmv stop all in one trip. I have the title in hand, but I need the smog to do a title transfer and registration all in one stop. The tapping sound that I am not liking is not the really hard knocking, but more of a tapping as the motor loads up, and then it gets quiet again as the motor levels off. Hopefully it will make it. I need to get the drive cycles since I had the battery out of it, and I think it will take about 30 or 40 miles to get the drive cycles done. Do any of you know the actual events that need to occur for the drive cycles to register right? I think some cars have something like 2 minutes of idle, 2 minutes at 55 mph, etc. |

Before you do something drastic check the crank gear. Remove the gear and check the key and keyway and see if the bolt thru the gear is tight. I have heard before that if this is loose on the keyway "just a little" then it can sound like a rod or main bearing knock. |

That is what David said too. I will definitely check that out first. |

Drive cycle isn't too bad. I usually get one a day driving to and from work. First 5 miles city driving, 45 MPH max, then 8 miles interstate, 60+ MPH, and lastly 1 mile city, mostly idle/coasting, and the reverse on way home. (EGR problems suck) I do know that for it to count as a cycle, the engine temp must be at ambient temp at startup. So even after 9 hours sitting at work, I couldn't get the engine temp low enough to cycle. I'll look thru the FSM and see if it is listed |

Looks just like the white 2000 I picked up a few days ago off of CL. Mine grinds in 5th, needs a front bumper & driver's door or door dent repair. |

One of my daughters has been driving my 1997, and is away at college. (UC Santa Cruz) She called me and said she was having antifreeze problems, so I pulled this one into the shop this morning to get it ready for a Metro swap. I don't really know what the problem is with the one she is driving now, but I figure I will load up some water jugs and some tools into this one when it is ready, and drive the 97 back here. I have another 2000 3/5 out in front of the shop that is wrecked, so I pulled the motor out of that one this morning as well. Just taking a little break before I load the new used motor into this car. Hopefully no problems, and I can drive this one home tonight.

Feel free to stop by if you are passing through this neck of the woods. I keep a fridge here at the shop full of soda, rockstar, and water, and I have a restroom. A pit stop is fine if you are rolling through town. Chances are I will be wrenching on a Metro, but I mat not have all the rides here to check out. I left the house this morning and saw rain clouds, so the Tevie1 stayed home in the garage and I switched my garage door opener over to my trusty 96 3/5 that was sitting in the driveway. None of the pretty ones have ever seen rain before... |

Everything went smoothly with the engine swap, and she fired right up like I had just driven it 5 minutes ago, other than a little cough. The Brian guy that I bought the wrecked donor 2000 3/5 from apparently took really nice care of his Metro. He had robbed the fifth gear for his beautiful XFI, so I transferred my 4.10 that I had just put in this one over to the new motor. When I checked out the clutch to see which one was better, the one on the donor 2000 looked brand spankin new, so I left it on there. I did not even unbolt it to verify the rivet depth on the friction plate since it was obviously really new. Anyway, I did not have any synchromesh or substitute oil to fill up the transmission with, so no test drive home in this one tonight. I have a little mattress that fits in the back of my pickup here at the shop, so I will crash here tonight and get some tranny oil in the morning and take it for a drive. All the cars are in for the night, and this is my bedroom tonight... ![]() |

Awesome, will pass by if I get a chance! I love the PnP's down there, the Redding one is okay but you have several in your zip! I may get brave and drive OBi down to you! Edited by Nappers, Nov 2 2014, 02:38 AM.
