My neighbors, Kim & Jim, picked up this 1992 convertible a couple weeks back. ![]() ![]() They Love it! Cruises surprisingly well for 146,000 miles. The 4,000rpms(automatic), at 60mph, is not going to break any mpg records. But still light years better than the ol' 300M. It's more of the smiles per miles at this point. Finally had a chance to give it a little look over. ![]() Engine bay looks pretty good for a Minnesota car. ![]() Nice clean spark plugs. ![]() Compression is 185, 55, 165. Then why are the plugs so clean? Doesn't matter. We know there's work to be done. I'm amazed at how well it cruises at highway speeds on basically 2 cylinders. I'm not liking this lower radiator support. ![]() ![]() Could be the reason for the headlights not quit aligned. ![]() There's also evidence of shenanigans, going on, in the front as well. Washers stacked up here, holes drilled there, this bent, that bent, etc. Looks like the whole front end is coming off. One hole in the floor pan. ![]() We know there will be more compromised material as we dig deeper. There appears to be a sizable amount of body filler along the rockers. I could ice pick through a bunch of places along where the rocker meets the floor pan. But 99% of the floor pans are solid. Both front & rear control arm mounts a rock solid. This will get a Turbine Tech frame brace regardless. Next step will be to pull the carpet and see exactly what we're in for. And decide what "level" of engine refresh, or build, they are up for. |

Thanks and Amen! I know this will be more surgery than they expect. No super bad, but more than meets the eye. I'm breaking it to them easy. I coined a phrase, "The magnitude, of the task, is rarely comprehended by the requester". We're taking this a little at a time since they're only about 2 blocks away.

PM me if you end up needing a rust-free donor piece... I do not own a sawzall, but I just found out recently that my Mom does... (how did I not know this?! )I am possibly the slowest shipper in existence, but, maybe I can farm out the shipping work to MMM, he's great at it... ![]() Anyway, food for thought. I can make a parts run, if you need me to.

Or you could drill out the spot welds? |

I did that last time! Took fo-EVA. MMM claims with a sawzall it would take waaaaaaaaay less time. I've never sawzalled anything, so I wouldn't know - but it HAS to be faster than drilling out all the welds! There are a LOT of them!

We would definitely go for an un-salted, straight lower radiator support. And yeah, drilling the spot welds is quite a process. The frame would need to be cut so I could drill out the spot welds later. Remember my saying, "The magnitude, of the task, is rarely comprehended by the requester"? This time the Offer-er may not comprehend the magnitude of the task. But it's you Mythstae! You can do Anything. I would be honored if you could get a lower radiator support.

Maybe your compression gauge was not sealing well on that cylinder. Better check it good and know for sure that cylinders compression is low. Use another guage. |

Whatcha mean? I mean, I know you gotta take off the bumper. Maybe some fenders. No big deal. Then fire up the sawzall!

C'mon Rhino, are you suggesting the Snowfish doesn't know how to use a compression gauge, or he didn't try it several times to make sure he didn't make a mistake. I have to admit, I would probably ask the same question of somebody that just signed up for the forum, but Snowfish?? Really???

Things happen. Does not matter who you are. I would check and recheck before I tore into a engine. |

We didn't need a compression gauge to know it had a burnt valve. http://geometroforum.com/single/?p=912320&t=5511385 It was more of a "drill" to see where the other cylinders were at.
Thanks Melanie! Let me know what you need.

I dug into Kim & Jim's convertible yesterday & today. First a decent power wash. I think I'm becoming allergic to grease! ![]() Cleaned up pretty good. Then into the garage. ![]() First time swapping engines on an automatic. Had to study things a bit. ![]() This JDM has been waiting since March. ![]() Flex plate access. ![]() The rear mount is hilarious! Took awhile to figure that one out. ![]() Got the engine pulled. Now time to move parts around.![]() ![]() Got most of it done. Still need to replace some hoses. Some are pretty soft. ![]() This poor car has been slapped around a bit. I noticed a decent crease in the passenger side frame. ![]() ![]() This explains the larger than normal gap between the headlights & hood. For now, it's just the way it's going to be. I do need to address the lower radiator support. ![]() ![]() Would be nice to have a rust free one. But this one will get some welding to re-enforce it. Won't be pretty, but it should be functional. Hope to update more later. |

Wow. Snowfish you rock. That rust you all deal with must be a pain! Nice looking car.
