You ever feel like you should have let that sleeping dog lie? Fuel gauge wasn't working so I decided to do some exploratory surgery. Pulled the tank this morning. Popped the pump out along with sending unit (they are one assembly on the 91). Peeked inside & saw what looked like river mud inside the tank. Dumped out the gas & couldn't believe the crap inside. Pulled out at least a pound of rust. Looked like some kid had been dropping random pieces of metal down the filler pipe. Un frickin believable! Sending unit almost rusted away, fuel pump metal rusted. Cleaned everything as best I could & put it back together until I can maybe find a good complete tank. Installed a new see through fuel filter under the hood Dumped about 4 gals of gas back in & cycled the pump. Heard it running & shut off. Tried that several times, plus just left the key on for awhile, nothing. Fuel never pumped up to the TB. Crawled back under to start pulling hoses & see if pump was pumping back there when I saw a steady stream of gas dripping off the tank. Looked closer & found I now have a hole in the tank about 1/8 in dia. Put a bucket underneath & drained it all. Going to hunt up some Marine-Tex tomorrow & try to fix it, then try & figure out why no gas is getting to the front. They say Marine-Tex is the bomb for repairs like this. Never had much luck with JB Weld or tank repair putty. Update at 11 Here's what I found inside. YUK!!!! Yummy!
I have a feeling this is setting yourself up for disappointment. I know that you like fixing stuff, but that is kaput. I see a new tank, pump, and sending unit in your future. Paint it pretty and don't think about it for the 15+ years.

I'm going to agree with Snowfish, I have never seen one that bad, and I live in rust central!! Do yourself a huge favor, and replace all of it. WOW, that's bad!!

Had the same problem with my GT. I fix it the easy way: new pump , filter and lines. got tank off of a 92 totaled metro that I had and cleaned it up. bow I have nice clean gas going to the injectors. |

Wow, that is bad. Put that tank in the recycle bin and start from scratch. It ain't worth the trouble nor time to bring it back to life. Ask Stiffcheeze if he can find you one and ship it to ya. Heck, I've got a Gen 2 tank with all the goodies that I'll probably never need, but the shipping would kill the deal. |

Yeah, I'd like to get a new or very good used everything. Can't locate a new sending unit. Car ran great. Only reason I pulled it was because the fuel gauge wasn't working. Can't find any Metros in the boneyards around here anymore. Anybody got a good working sender they want to get off of? Big Rhino posted a link for a new tank @ Rockauto & I could buy a new pump, just need the sending unit.

rockauto for the new tank, bowens on ebay for a new fuel filler hose, ebay e8023 fuel pump and strainer, and mythstae for a clean used fuel tank door/ sending unit assembly. the tank is way beyond patching. on a side note, those see through fuel filters usually won't take the fuel pressure for an injection system. they are more for low pressure carbureted systems. i recommend a steel canister type filter. |

Your fuel system will love the filter located at the tank. Traps that rust and crap and keeps it out of your fuel lines as well. |

How the hell......? As a matter of fact, I DO think I have one in the garage. Now where is it in that black hole? Lemme dig and see if I can find it.
Beat me to it.
