First off I would like to say that the PO removed my catalitic converter and I am not really happy about that. They just cut it out and welded a piece of pipe in its place. I was wondering if not having a cat will mess with my air fuel mixture since the o2 sensors are after the cat. Will it hurt my car in the long run? Also is there any good reason that some one would remove the cat? Some reason that the car wouldn't function right if I just put one on and didn't change anything else? And lastly how much money shout I be looking to spend when I replace it? Should I get a universal one or a direct fit? |

The cat is there for emissions. Some people remove it cuz they hate the government trying to tell them what to do. Others remove it because they think it will give them more power. Others remove it because it is clogged from burning oil. If you live in an area that has smog testing, then you may not pass emissions. There should be an O2 sensor before the cat, so cat removal should not affect the fuel to air ratio. If you have a second O2 sensor after the cat, then it is there to monitor the cat and you will get a check engine light with an error code indicating the cat is not working. But you can get around this by leaving the O2 sensor exposed to air (so I've heard). Maybe the PO did that already. If you don't have to pass emissions, I would leave it alone. If you live in a smog test area or feel bad about the exhaust stinking, then get a cat. About 7 years ago I got a cat replaced on a Tracker for $100. |

95 and earlier, screw the convertor. 96 and later, keep it. |

Silver2K is correct. " If you have a second O2 sensor after the cat, then it is there to monitor the cat and you will get a check engine light with an error code indicating the cat is not working. But you can get around this by leaving the O2 sensor exposed to air (so I've heard). Maybe the PO did that already." And you will see it tied off, perhaps against the firewall or on my Wife's car, sitting near the RF motor mount. No, it will not hurt your car to run without the Cat. If the Cat. was restricting the flow then removing it was a good thing. Some people just "gut the Cat." by using a pole/rod pushed in the exhaust pipe to break holes in the screens in the Cat. If you put in a new Cat. without the O2 sensor you will have no way of knowing when/if the Cat. is clogged or inefficient, and we are talking years down the road... probably. IF you have the Check Engine Light showing (No Cat. and two sensors reading the same voltage), and I suspect you don't, then you will not know if there is another problem causing the CEL to come on. That is a bad thing. Is your a 1.3 or 1.0 engine? From RockAuto 1.0: DAVICO MANUFACTURING Part # 16203 $100 plus shipping. ![]() 1.3: DAVICO MANUFACTURING Part # 15091 $137 plus shipping. ![]() Watch the shipping prices before you buy. http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/search/Catalytic+Converters-universal has the DAVICO for the 1.0 for $128.17 with FREE SHIPPING. As you can see, it's 4 bolts, a hangar, screw-in O2 sensor and some gaskets. Don't for get the gaskets (maybe some anti-seize) |

remove the cat all together, cats get plugged up and sometimes u can't go over 80kmh without it back firing simply cause exhaust wont flow out or very little iv seen people cut them out on new vehicles simply cause of that if u wanna spend the money and have problems down the road get a cat if not let them wield a piece of pipe in it wont affect your Air to fuel mixture thats the upstream one that dose that downstream is just to tell you if your cat is working property or if its plugged |

just provide your cat with enough food and water, occasionally pet the thing, watch out for chairs, they are easy to sit on. maybe you would be better off with a dog.... |
