1990 Geo Metro Automatic; No power to coil (sometimes)

I have a 1990 geo Metro Automatic California Regulation 4 door car.

My car has spark, or no spark... When no spark, I'm guessing I have no power going to the coil. I tested for spark and had none (when car chooses to not start) I took off the positive and negative cables to the coil. Touched them together and held them together while someone else was trying to turn over the car. I got no spark, and no fuses blown.

A few days later, the car started up again.

After driving a while, it will choose to not start for a few days. I replaced the coil with a more expensive coil from part store, I now have code 41 flashing.

Any ideas for a fix? can I just run positive and negative wire from the battery to the coil? or not a good idea?

I don't know what the fix is or the problem is?

My daughter's 93 automatic was doing the same thing. It would start....it wouldn't start. Turned out to be the starter.

I would have thought the same except in his other thread on this same subject he indicated that he was losing spark also. I will stick to what I said on that thread:

if I was you I would check the interlocks that require you to be in park, or neutral with your brake on before the starter will engage.

I am not sure what all is involved with the Geo Automatics, but I would check the interlocks. I am wondering if they are (almost) out of adjustment and work correctly sometimes but sometimes cut off your ignition wiring ..........
