got the engine started and it had a knock. pulled off the pan and found copper flakes in the oil pan. replaced the rod bearings. and there's no way the copper came from them. looked up in the cylinders noo scrapes or strangeness there. the head is brand new rebuilt. would the large flakes be from the main bearings? can I change them from the bottom? this is all on a 93 1.0 with a Raven Redrive in an experimental airplane. thanks g |

that would be a misalignment of the re-drive pushing back on the crankshaft. the flakes are from the 2 thrust bearings. they are there to keep the crankshaft in position. ![]() when the re-drive is mounted too close to the block it shoves the crank back against the thrust bearings and they wear pretty quickly. |
