Do you ever fix soooo many things on your car and you just get that great feeling of knowing you're riding on your own handy work? Sometimes I ponder what would go out next and try to think ahead. The only thing I could come up with is alternator. Guess what? That's exactly what happened.

Yesterday when I went to the store my second battery in the hatch became disconnected. Car wouldn't start when I came back out. Found the connection and reconnected, drove home with dim lights and very little get up and go.

This morning I put a volt meter on it. 12.2V before start, 11.9V running. Yup... need an alternator. I just can't believe a 55amp alternator costs as much as the 135amp alt in my Mercury! WTF? Supply and demand I guess. Best thing about this, NOBODY has them in stock. :shake

Normally this wouldn't be a big deal but the Mercury needs tires and a water pump (you can see the pulley moving in and out). So yay! A trip to the u pull it yard to get a used alternator that I'd rather not get.

I suppose life could be worse. :beer

Alright, found a rebuilt at Pep Boys. Should be here tomorrow before 2. I would have hated putting a used alternator on, I like to know I have years left before doing it again.

You can do the cs130 alternator upgrade for less than a new/used 55amp would cost.....

I wish I would have known how much cheaper that alt is. I would have just gotten a battery charger, this thing would make it to and from work on a full charge no problem. Question though, if my volt light came on when I broke the belt, why would it not be on now even though I have lower voltage while running than when off?

Alright! New alt. is installed, took me all of 30 minutes, I didn't have AC lines to wrestle around (no AC). Had to drop it out the bottom still though. 13.4V running now. Wonder what could go out next? Thinking water hoses/radiator.
