I finally got my 95 back on the road yesterday-all went well, except for my Speedo, Odometer & Green Shift Light not working(they worked a 2 months ago). My car has been down for a cig smoke removal & a tune up. Well this morning going to work the CHECK ENGINE light came on(oh noooooooo). I bought the car a few months ago & drove it for 3 weeks with no problems at all. 1st off, it has a new engine/trans w/only 20k on it-have receipts for both, it is a 1.0 & 5 spd. I put in some new NGK-G plugs & wires, cap/rotor, air filter, cleaned thottle body & even cleaned out the EGR & the ports in the head & all vacuum lines-but it was still clean from the rebuild. It did fail the NOX on the emissions from the past owner-he put a new upstream O2 sensor on & still failed. This car was from El Cajon California so it has the dual Cats on em-I wonder if it a CAT problem, because it certainly is not an EGR issue.

The last NOX readings are as follows: 15mph Measure=1289PPM(Parts Per Million), Average 126(PPM), Max 753(PPM) FAIL!
25mph Measure=1099PPM FAIL!

Also it failed the HC too, but not as bad as the NOX.

15mph Measure=63PPM, Average 36(PPM), Max 73(PPM)
25mph Measure=44PPM, Average 25(PPM), Max 48(PPM)**

**Note the HC seems to be in the pass zone, but the smog station has it in the FAIL category, hmmmm??????????

Regarding the speedo issue-I saw a post that one member said regarding a non working speedo could have an issue with the VSS(Variable Speed Sensor)which is on the back of the cluster by the speedo. Then another member corrected him by saying Metros don't have a VSS but a mechanical switch on the back of the speedo which would send a signal to the Green Shift Light. I'm not sure on any of this??? One note: I tried to take the car to Auto Zone & have them run a Check Engine Code w/their scanner, but noooooooooo since it is a OBDI I they can't do it-also went to Oreilly's & Pep Boys & they said the same thing-nobody has the adapter for OBDI I, only the OBDI II. JUST GREAT!!! Any ideas would be appreciated... :)

Sir Metrologist

Fix your broken speedometer cable. All will be well. (with your speedometer problems anyway) ^o)

There's no scanner for OBD1, you put a fuse into the raised up slot on the fusebox, then the check ingine light will blink codes at you. Your code is almost certainly for the VSS, check both ends of the speedometer cable to make sure it's fully plugged in.

The forum library has Factory Service Manuals for the 1994 and 1997 Metros. Even though neither of those are your exact year they do a good job of covering the major differences between the "older" range of years and the "newer" ones. Someone more experienced like Woodie can tell you which yours is more similar to, as I understand several systems changed during the 95 model year. You already said it has California emissions.

There are Scan Tools for the OBD I systems that use the vehicles ALDL connector (don't know if yours has one or not), but they are typically harder to find someplace with one to read your codes for you. And they are pretty pricey online. If you have an ALDL connector under the dash, you may want to try a few more parts stores like NAPA to see if anyone has a Scan Tool to read OBD I, but the procedure Woodie described is easy enough to get the code. There are also companies that make a connector and provide free software to read OBD I systems and can display information much like a ScanGauge or UltraGauge can. RhinoPower comes to mind.

Each section has a basic description of that system before it gets into diagnostic and repair procedures. For example, there are instructions on how to check for codes (the way Woodie described to you), how to read the flashes, a diagnostic/troubleshooting section for each code, etc.

There's even a section covering the Upshift Indicator, which is controlled by the Engine Control module, not a speed sensor. The ECM uses a few other parameters in addition to vehicle speed before it enables, disables, or signals the Upshift Indicator to illuminate.

Good luck getting everything squared away.
