Geo 1.0 backfires through throttle body

I need to fix my engine so it will pass emissions.

It has been giving multiple codes of misfire on #1 cylinder

Throttle body is black from backfiring.

I am thinking about having the head rebuilt because I have read on some threads that it's probably a burnt valve.

Engine is a 1.0 that I purchased used as a Japanese import back in 2008. It has high miles

Thanks

Sounds like you may have a sticking valve. Have you done a compression test on the engine.

Check the plug and wires and cap on it to make sure they are in good shape. A miss fire should not cause a backfire unless your valve is stuck open or timing is way off.

Check to make sure your timing belt hasn't slipped a tooth.

Good suggestions. Do a compression check first, then check timing. Intake valves don't usually burn but it isn't impossible. If one cylinder is way lower in compression than the others, you probably found the problem.

Thanks,

Timing was way off, only around 1 to 2 degrees.

I am still getting a misfire on the same cylinder although the engine seems to not be backfiring.

Engine does idle kind of rough

Thanks for the timing suggestions!

After adjusting the timing, I was able to pass emissions!

This forum is awesome!!!
