I know! I told Henry, part of the great following of our Metros comes down to the pure simplicity of their design & ease of working on them. Although...theoretically, the Ford will not "need" work for quite some time. Either way, it is tight under the hood! |

Had a great lunch hour with Matt Spiess in Lansing, MI comparing 20 years of progress on 3-holers. Matt's '95 Metro vs. Ford's new '15 Fiesta SFE. Matt's good description of our test is nearby. Here's a brief YouTube video I've posted of the highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2Zxg-e9doA&feature=youtu.be. I'll have a comparo column and more video in a month in The Detroit News. I'll provide link when it happens. Love this Geo Metro Forum.

The Metro is the Model T of the late 20th Century. Easy to work on, lots of room, and as long as you treat it decently, it'll last for darned near ever!! Not the classiest buggy on the block, but one of the most economical and reliable you could hope to find.

One thing to remember for your comparison is to compare the relative prices. A '95 Base Metro hatchback had an MSRP of $8085 (http://www.automotive.com/geo/metro/1995/t3-12-1/) which would be the same as $12644 today (http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm). The 2014 Fiesta SE hatch with 3 cylinder has an MSRP of $17150 (http://bp3.ford.com/2014-Ford-Fiesta?branding=1&lang=en#/Exterior/Config[|Ford|Fiesta|2014|1|1.|200A.P4E.....HAT.85E.44C.~YZKAA.SE.]) You might consider comparing the Metro, Fiesta SFE AND the other 3 cylinder on the market today - the Mitsubishi Mirage. MSRP $13805 (http://www.mitsubishicars.com/build/2014/MG44/trims/DE/5MT#.). 42MPG highway. Compared to either car, the Metro has a good case to make for value - even considering inflation, it cost less to buy (way less than the Fiesta), has better fuel economy and generally lower running costs. Plus Metros were available as a convertible! Performance, emissions, safety and modern conveniences are another story. Can't wait to see the article. Edited by punkozuna, Jul 23 2014, 12:20 AM.

Hi guys and gals, My Geo's is a 98 3/5 hatch with about 97k miles on it, and bought with 65k for $1600.00 privet party, (let's call it) "out the door" price. Changed all belts, water pump, use good filters as needed, (cheap insurance) and run mobile1 5-30 like a good boy. Okay 1.9 K$ with it's mechanical insurance policy, "out the door". My guess is the Ford in the video, on average, cost somewhere around 22 K$ cash "out the door" without finance fees and interest. My 19 year old daughter drives a 96 geo 4/5 4 door that we put together for her. She loves the car and those 25$ fuel stops don't hurt so bad either. Total cost about 1500$, not including my labor. And it's a runner getting 40 mpg, however she gets better mpg than I do for some reason. So anyway, she sees her young friends buried and strapped for cash for the next 4,5,6,7 years and smiles again. (Caution subliminal messaging abounds) Bottom line imo, our Geo's are much better than just 40 or 50 mpg, plus they're are going up in value, not down... Well, if ya take care of em that is, and don't crash em either. ;) Gotta admit that ford is fast for one liter. Maybe we should research attaching neodymium magnets to the front of a geo and rerun that test. Just thinking outside box again. |

Congrats Matt. Love to see the metro making it to yet another article. Our little cars will stand the test of time. The auto makers are getting close to mpg for sure. The one thing we hands down still beat the pants off them with is initial start up costs. Im proud to say I traded my 2002 dodge dakota ext cab truck I had 3 years ago for my metro even trade. Everyone thought I was crazy for doing it. Well to go from 18 mpg to 47. Do the math, how long did it take me to recoup my loss? Rhetorical question. I for sure got the better end of the deal.

Enjoyed reading the article and I am sure the Fiesta would be a nice car to own and drive but them payments would suck a major. The metro was a lot more affordable during its sales time as opposed to the Fiesta if I got my guess right. The appearance of the metro scared a lot of people off from them compared to the appearance of the Fiesta. The fiesta looks pretty much like any car you might see on the road but the metro at first glance really jarred you. Gas mileage should be increasing with technology, not decreasing. While comfort, handling and appearance have made strides why can they not make great strides in fuel consumption as well? |

I enjoyed it as well. I would only have one car payment if I bought one though & it would be used. There's not much sense in buying brand new, but to each their own. Granted the Chevy Spark has a price tag $5k less than the Fiesta, 1 year old Sparks are already less than $10k on craigslist. Give the Fiesta time & prices will be more affordable. There's no doubt the Metro was & still is much more affordable. I posted this article on my FB page & someone asked where he can buy a Metro for $1k. I found 7 on my craigslist & 6 where my friend lives lol The Fiesta is a very nice ride. I was thoroughly impressed by it. Gas mileage is increasing with technology and would be much better if EPA was abolished. For example, my 2011 Chevy Cruze Eco 1.4T which is 3k lbs is currently averaging 53.3 MPG. My current MPG in the Metro is 56.3 MPG. Same commute. Same speed. I'm convinced the Fiesta, with the right driver, can easily exceed 50 MPG on a daily basis.

Unless I'm reading something wrong or there's a typo, I can't find a Fiesta SFE model for 2015...or an offering of a 1.0 turbo model. Ford.com lists 1.6 only unless I'm not finding it. I am at times somewhat Google-impaired. Maybe it was available 2014 & not current? Either way, I ain't giving up Momma's Meo Getro. |
