91 Metro Engine cuts off

Its a 91 Base 5spd. Always started right up every day. Never had problem in 3 1/2 years. Car would buck on acceleration from stop. sometimes would hear a backfire. Been doing this for over a year.

Car sat for 3 weeks recently. Replaced brakes and axles.

Started fine. Ran car to store came out and no start. Starter was engaging, engine was spinning but no fire. Tried starting several times. Nothing.

Popped hood, removed air cleaner expecting to smell fuel from no start, but their was no fuel smell.

Got back in car, tried again, started right up, no problem. I figure a sticking relay was the problem.

Drove 20 miles to work next day, no problem.

Driving home at 45 mph, engine suddenly cut off, lights were on as when key is turned in ignition. Would not start. Drifted to a safe parking lot, turned the key and the car started as if nothing was wrong.

Stopped at a store, came out, car started right up. Stopped running after 2 or 3 seconds. Tried again, started fine, ran for 5 seconds and then stopped. Popped hood stared at it, talked to car. Restarted and ran fine the whole way home.

I've done a few hours of searching here and my suspicions are either something electrical or the injector.

For the record, the radio has always been a bit twitchy. If I flash the high beams the radio would loose all presets and return to demo mode. If radio would go to loud it would cut out and return to the station I had preset. Pulled the radio and fixed a few loose wires. I'm going to yank that system and rewire everything from the fuse block.

Fuel pump hums on startup for a second or two. Not sure if humming when car doesn't start.

These are the facts Jack.

Thanks in advance for comments and confirmations of my suspicions.

Sounds like a fuel pump problem, Need to listen for the pump when it wont start.

My Grand Marquis did this exact same thing after sitting for a while. If it sat on a near empty tank you could have corrosion in the pump. In my case it worked itself out after a few good drives.

Test, do not guess got me thinking,( thank you for those simple words of wisdom.)

I noticed the car would only cut off after being driven for a while. I figure heat soak was causing the intermittent failure. So I drove the car for about 20 minutes, stopped it and then restarted no problem. Went inside came out 10 minutes later It wouldn't start.

Fuel pump hummed on when ignition turned on.

Next test, pulled the coil wire off the distributor, NO Spark.

So, I have a spare coil that is on my 94 XFI, Can I use that coil on my 91 that uses the older looking coil?
