The new trans fluid at the right level makes a big difference. I change it in my driveway, at operating temp. but I would wait for Mr. webb to weight in on it. |

trans fluid should be purchased only at VW the filter should be removed , to drain most of the fluid if the filter is just a screen it can be cleaned and re used if the filter is paper or cloth , replace it the procedure to re fill is un conventional on older cars with 01 transmissions there is a fill tube with a plastic cap on newer cars with 09 transmissions the trans gets filled with a large syringe thru the fluid inspection tube at trans temp of 20c engine idling trans fluid should drip out of the fluid inspection tube (small 5mm allen "drain" plug ) if you really want to do this i will post more complete instructions it is not difficult to do but all steps must be followed especially the 20c part Edited by mwebb, Sep 7 2014, 10:45 PM.

Unconventional, you can say that again! So in the time between when I last posted, and just now (aka, before I read your last post) I did tear into the transmission. I already had purchased this kit and it had been waiting for me to have some free time: 4-Speed Transmission Filter Kit from Blauparts I used both the directions supplied with the kit cross referenced with the instructions provided by a newbeetle.org forum member found here: How to Change Transmission Filter The fluid I got in my kit was slightly different than pictured on the site, updated, some kind of full synthetic from Ravenol which, of course, blauparts swears up and down meets and exceeds all OEM requirements. It was nice of them to include a hand pump to get that fluid in there. So I did the procedure slowly and carefully. Getting the car up in the air but also sitting level was a bit of a challenge, lot of farting around with jackstands and trying not to die under that green car... they gave me 3 liters of fluid in the kit and on the site it says it may or may not be enough. It wasn't quite enough. I begrudgingly added a pint or so of the old fluid back in to get it to drip out of the inspection tube as the directions described. I don't have vag com (although I ordered a cheap cable and am going to try to get an older copy of ross-tech's software working with it, for future reference) so my only way to measure the trans temp was by pointing a non-contact thermometer at the bottom of the pan and assuming that once the pan reached the specified temperature the contents must also be at that temperature, or higher. I lowered the car but have not driven it yet. I am pretty confident in the fluid level, it jives with the amount removed and the amount put back in, but the pan gasket is a sneaky little biznitch. The kit of course contained a new gasket and spacers and I used them but, getting the gasket up there properly without it being overtightened is tricky. I have no torque wrenches that go down to the 9 INCH pounds they specify for those bolts... I thought the gasket was in place properly it looked ok all the way around then after starting and warming the car to check the level I watched that dumb thing suck once side of the gasket halfway into the pan! I was able to loosen the pan, coerce the gasket back into place, and tighten it again, but I am highly suspicious of it now and will be very closely monitoring it for a while (I didn't put the skid plate back on yet). So, I don't know. I plan on taking it for a short 4 mile trip over to my folks house after work tomorrow. If it shifts fine and doesn't slurp the gasket into the pan again then... I'll feel slightly less nervous about it.... For as black as the fluid was that came out, I probably should just drive it a short ways and then repeat the process of draining and refilling with new fluid, potentially with another filter, and then re-seat that gasket. When I first put it on I thought "this form fit gasket is practically dummy proof!" but it turns out if it isn't on just right or gets a little too tight or not tight enough... potential for catastrophic leakage and that makes me really unhappy. So, there it sits until tomorrow night. And then... maybe test drive... maybe pull pan off and repeat entire process... I don't know. I need more of that fancy ATF. Much appreciate your input and advice, mwebb (and others). I hope you know I'm not purposefully ignoring any of it just sometimes I go do things in the garage and then come back and look at the forum after the fact... but like I said I haven't driven it yet so its not too late for me to start the procedure over again. |

I have nothing to add to the technical side of the discussion, I know nothing about VWs. But - your purple parts look really nice!

Why didn't you call me? I have one that you can use any time., And you're Sure it's 9 Inch Pounds. Not 9ftlbs? which is 108inch pounds. Or 9nm which is 80 inch pounds? Great job on going after it. I'm sure Kiah is thankful too.

Indeed, 9 foot pounds, my bad. Still no torque wrenches that go down that far. I went about a dozen miles in it today, no issues. The evening's project was rotating the tires. I'm about ready to button it all back up and give it back to her with a "hope for the best" |

At least the steering wheel shudder is gone now that I've rotated the tires. I can still feel it in the back but its less noticeable. I'll have her take it in to get those balanced. The trans pan doesn't appear to be leaking anywhere, I'll test drive it the rest of the week and if all seems well on Friday I'll give it back to her for a while. I considered ordering more of that expensive ATF and doing another fluid exchange to dilute the old crap with some more new oil, but the information on newbeetle.org tells me its all kind of in vain as the real problem with the shifting is likely valve body wearing out. They don't seem to expect that even a full fluid flush would really buy it that many more miles. In light of that, I think I will let it go as-is until her next oil change comes around and at that time I will probably go ahead and exchange 3 quarts of the old ATF for new fluid again, possibly put in another filter, and tell her she needs to start saving up about $700 for a rebuilt valve body. Need to get that silly green thing OUT of the garage so I can get back to my Sprint, I just have a hard time letting anything out of my garage when there are still little issues for me to pick at

9 newton meters about 90" lbs max i have a aircraft assembly air tool that auto torques everything to 85" lbs and i use that for all 6mm fasteners ..... when it fits i have a current VCDS in beta version and in the current version for the mortals and work with ODIS the VW factory scan tool when testing trans temp for refilling i use an infrared thermometer too , cause it's quicker and easier unless it is a warranty procedure and i need to submit a test plan with the refill operation in it then i have to use ODIS |

One can only hope
Aircraft assembly tool?!?! I need a compressor and some air tools, eventually. Right now I do everything the slow way, some walmart wrenches and sockets and a 3' breaker bar for the big stuff... Do you mean you wrote your own VCDS or are you using the ross-tech stuff? My $10 ebay cable with the older ross-tech software was tested working last night using an old laptop, found the spot where I could have properly measured the trans temp, a bit too late but oh well, sounds like the non-contact thermometer method was ok
How much garbage did you have to strip out before it was light enough to be moved reasonably fast? These newer beetles are pushing 3000 pounds curb weight! Very cool though. I used to build electric bicycles and have had a side project electric motorcycle for a couple years now but I just haven't had time or money to put into it. I loved my electric bicycle when I was in college though. It was not much to look at but then nobody had to look at it for very long as I zipped through campus and the nearby parts of the city at 25 mph. I assembled most of it in my dorm room using limited resources and a shoestring budget (see above...walmart wrenches...) but it held together for almost 1000 miles before I retired it. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Arudlang, this is just a customer car that is here for some fab work, but I think that a 1962 VW weighs less than a Metro XFI. This one weighs quite a bit less though. I have to admit that working on this customers VW sure makes me consider getting one... |
