Looked at a 2 door hatch yesterday & noticed that the steering rack mounting area was rusted. The frame horns & rest of the body seem fine. Anybody else seen this? What's the fix? Enquiring minds would like to know. :hmm

Weld a new one on in its place.

I removed the rack and welded in a new mount with a welded nut on the back. A larger patch panel with rosetta welds works fine. keep in mind it's easy work with the motor out.

Is this becoming a common problem, like frame horns? How many other people have seen this? JM, Snowfish, some of you other northern folks? Really seemed weird because I didn't notice any rust anywhere else.

I think it has to do with how much they work the metal. Frame horns turn into an oxide over the years as do the rear sway bar mounts. If you asked the factory folks, they would say they have never seen a Metro with any rust issues.
