'97 Geo Metro 1.3L Lsi, service engine light returns an error for the EGR valve. Replaced the EGR valve, cleared the code, and it keeps coming back. Any theories? |

I probably should have just tried cleaning out the old one with cab cleaner instead of replacing it and saved myself $100, but I wasn't aware of that option at the time. |

you can try disconnecting the exhaust manifold where it meets the engine and cleaning out the egr port on the driver's side-you can then clean the egr passage in the engine block towards the rear from where the exhaust manifold bolts on-then with the egr valve off you can clean the passages from the valve towards the front of the engine and then from the valve towards the throttle body-these areas are harder to clean due to curves in the passage-then you can try cleaning your old egr valve |

Here's a thread on; Metro EGR System A quick check is to remove the EGR and start the engine. See if you feel compressed air coming out the left port and a vacuum on the right port.

So I was trying to clean out the EGR port and in the process discovered that my exhaust manifold is cracked after removing the shield. Apparently the SOHC non-California model EMs for this car are hard to find since I can't find anybody that has them. The EM for the 1992 Suzuki Swift is supposed to work, but I can't locate that one either. My current gambit is to try to clean the surface with a wire brush and attempt using ThermaSteel to seal the crack. Edited by Akagi, Aug 10 2014, 03:40 AM.

I checked GM parts direct and they have a 4 cylinder exhaust manifold for 114.98-think that's the right one-(can't recall what SOHC is) |

SOHC is single overhead cam which is what MOST of our cars are. You might try JB Weld or similar but expect mixed results. You will get better results if you clean any surfaces really well with brake cleaner or such and make sure they are roughed up (if possible). Conor |

My plan is to use the high temperature verson of QuikSteel called "QuikSteel Extreme" that is rated to 2400° to repair the crack. It looks like my exhaust manifold might come off in 2 pieces when the bolts come out. The bolt heads seem to be twisting off when I try to remove them, so they'll have to be taken out the hard way. I'm trying to find a matching exhaust manifold off a junker to use as a replacement part. I figure even if it is cracked I can try the QuikSteel fix and then take out my old one and try to patch that up as well while I see how long it holds for since I'm currently driving this vehicle. Some have reported pretty good results with Quiksteel Extreme when they heat treat the site after application and allow a good 8+ hours for it to set (17+ months & still holding). The Quiksteel didn't work, although I didn't have enough time to give it the full 24 hours it needs to cure. I've ordered another EM and I'm waiting for it to ship. I'll experiment with repairing the old EM again after I get the new one in since I won't be needing to use it. |
