So I'm new here and love the site! So I have a 97 chevy metro sedan 1.3 automatic. I want to do a swap to a 1.0 5 speed. My donar car is a 90 metro. Is there anything special I need to know when doing this? Also I plan on doing a complete overhaul on the new 1.0. So the question are:

1: Has anyone done this before and will I run into any big problems?
2: Doing a overhaul, is the any parts you recommend I get? I know I plan on doing a 3tech eco head and cam.

This can be done, but you need the computer and wiring harness along with all the other stuff to swap everything over.

I have both complete running cars. The 1.3 I bought with a blown motor. But the 1.0 runs great!

You still need the wiring harness out of a OBD2 1.0 motor and the parts to convert the 90 to an OBD2.

This will be ALOT of work. I would encourage you to get a FSM (Factory Service Manual) For both Your '97 AND your '90 if you are dead set on this.

The problem is you have two different emission standards, two different transmissions, AND two different engine controllers. :O

IIRC you can forget about using your airbags in your '97. Read to confirm.

You will have to make a custom harness to get it to work.

Can it be done? Absolutely. ^o)
But it's going to be a :shit load of work.
I myself would just get another Metro. You will come out more sane and richer in the end.

But if your into it, :rocker on!

Not my idea of fun. Listen to Stiffchezze, he makes very good sense. Sell the two & use funds to buy one that has what you're looking for.

Stiffchezze,

I think its more of a "you can't do it" thing I hear from my peers. Plus I don't think they made a 1.0 5sd in a sedan. The 97 is in prestine condition with only 71, 000 on it. (Too bad previous owner didn't know the oil pump went out or it would still be running.) I've always loved the sedans and loved my previos 92 g10 hatch I had, so I figured I would take the best of my wants and combine them. We don't have much of a selection of metros in Oklahoma and its hard to go to the dealer and order one. I will keep everyone posted on how my adventure goes.

Car nut,

Believe it or not I enjoy a good project with a challenge. Seems like there are plenty of knowledgeable people on here for my "what the crap do I do with this?" moments. If it can be done I'm gonna try. Hopefully it don't turn out to be a I should have listened to those guys on geometroforum.

The '90 is in horrible cosmetic shape. Both fenders are caved in plus its a rust bucket. Along with it being a 4 door hatch. (UGLY!!!) Oh, the '90 does not have a title as well.

I think you misunderstood me. I never said it could not be done. I will however, coincide, that if you follow through with your plan, you will have a VERY intimate knowledge of both a 1990 Metro and a 1997 Metro.

You will need to review EVERY wire in both cars. Some systems stayed the same through all model years, some did not. You have picked very opposites in the Metro world for your plan.

There will be ALOT of electrical work as well as welding to get it to fit. Nearly every part under the hood will have to be swapped, not to mention any maintenance item that needs to be done at the same time. Some items may have to be replaced from yet a third donor car.

At best what you will be left with is a underpowered Frankenstein of a car that will have very little to no resale value. There was a reason sedans did not come with a 1.0.
No mechanic will every touch you car. YOU will have to do everything to it.
(for most Metro owners, this is not a problem, but a badge of honor! :D )

At worst, TWO metros destine for the crusher. :(

I will follow your build thread and be happy to help. There are many of us on this forum that have the intimate knowledge of how to do this swap. Many a time I have worked on a project "just because I can" knowing that the only person that will find any appreciation of it will be myself.

This forum was built on the stance that every person has pride in their ride, and we respect each other because of it. I have seen some incredible things on this forum. Some things I have seen, I disagree with. Some mods have been questionable, but the only time you will hear me say "don't do it," is when it is down right dangerous. I do not believe you project is on this category, if done correctly.

That being said, as long as you know what your getting into, and you still want it, GO FOR IT! :thumb
I'll be watching! :popcorn
