Hey everyone! I've been using the forums to work on my 92 Metro since I got it last October. So far I've completely rebuilt the engine, replaced the exhaust system, replaced every door handle, seafoamed the engine correctly, and replaced a worn timing belt: MUCH THANKS! New problem that I can't find the answer to: My car didn't come with factory speakers installed, and since I have a lot of 8 hour drives between college and home ahead of me, I think I may just need a simple one. I'm thinking VERY simple: 4 4" speakers (2 front 2 back) 8" subwoofer with DIY box build (for basic bass) Basic AM/FM radio CD player w/MP3 receiver I don't know anything about car audio, but I did some searching and found this wiring diagram: ![]() Questions: Where should I put the speakers? (doors, next to seats, under dash, in trunk) Where should I put the subwoofer? (trunk, seats?) Do I need an amp if I don't need much bass or volume (not trying to cause heart attacks for the local grandmas)? Do I need a wiring harness? (like $5 on Amazon) Do I need a dash install kit? Or would it be easier to rig it? I'm also hoping to keep everything under $100 by getting cheap stuff off amazon/ebay/craigslist> Many thanks for any help. |

On a 1992 the speakers are at your knee to the outside of the dash on both sides. Some of the cars I have had had speakers in the grills in back seat area under window on both sides and there is a place in rear hatch if you remove cover. |

Check out my thread, Helpful Stereo Links; Stuff you might need to buy! There it has links (if they haven't gone dead) and part numbers (which you can search to get new links) for some items you'll probably need. Like a wiring harness adapter: http://www.ebay.com/itm/390658292435 and even some speaker adapters: http://www.ebay.com/itm/161375313415 These let you connect your equipment without cutting into the factory wires. Your wiring diagram is correct for the colors that will be on an aftermarket wiring harness adapter, like the first eBay link I provided. You wire that up to the harness that comes with your stereo. (I prefer soldering to connect the wires.) |

Thanks everyone! I've used all your suggestions. I found the locations for 4" speakers in front by the knees and in the hatch, though I didn't find any behind the rear seats. Mythstae - thanks for the parts list and recommendations; you've confirmed what I've been finding during my search. 12volt.com has a ton of valuable info; I've been reading about Ohms and wiring diagrams and speaker/sub setups> I've decided to just go with 4 4" speakers. Speakers will be mounted in factory locations. No amp. I'm getting a basic radio/usb/aux receiver, and a wiring harness from Amazon; a mounting kit and speaker harnesses from ebay. total of a little under $100. New Question: Wiring? I saw some wires in the hatch coming off the taillight and brake light wires that didn't have anything to plug into; I'm guessing that these are meant for speakers. In the front, though, I didn't see any wires. Will I need to get wires and wire it myself? Oh and any ideas about adapters? Thanks again. |

If your car never came with a stereo, the adapters will be tucked up in there pretty tight. Pic from 94RHDRollerskate's thread: http://geometroforum.com/single/?p=882293&t=5276894
And the rear speakers, pic also from 94RHDRollerskate's thread: http://geometroforum.com/single/?p=884194&t=5276894
This was for hooking up the rear speakers in a parcel shelf side support... |

Thanks! I found the wires in the front; they were in the same place as 94RHDRollerskate's were, way up in the instrument cluster cover taped to the other wires. I was thinking about looking for the rear side speakers but since I'm not putting anything in there I'll just leave it for future upgrades.Everything is in the mail except the stereo, which i'm trying to find locally. I'll post updates and pics as progress happens. Thanks again!

I have 4 4" kickers, 2 3x6 kickers, and a12. Two alpine amps, cs130 alternator and a red top battery. I got all my stuff used except the sub. I got a few hundred in it but it sounds good. Get the good 4" speakers and if you ever want them louder add a 4 ch amp for a huge difference. |

Speakers arrived today! along with wiring harness! Stereo comes tomorrow, and the speaker adapters and mounting bracket come monday. I'll get it all in Monday night hopefully since I don't work. What does the amp do, and how much of a difference does it make? Also, would a super cheap 6.5" sub improve sound a lot? |
