Move the 96 Intake, Distributor, Oil Pump, Oil Pan, and Alternator over to the 92 block. Everything should be plug & play at that point. Be sure to clean the EGR, and passages, on the intake, block, & exhaust manifold.

Crankshaft and camshaft timing belt sprockets, waterpump pulley, crankshaft pulley, timing belt cover, thermostat housing. Exhaust manifold, or at least the o2 sensor. There probably is more I missed. |

We need more information. You didn't say if the 96 was a 3 or 4 cyl or an automatic. Ken............ |

Don't forget that the '96 probably weighs another ~150-200 pounds so that '92 engine will be working a little harder in the new car. It might be wise to take compression tests and see if the swap is worth it. You might consider just doing a rebuild of the '96 while the engine is in the car, head job and hone the cylinders with new rings for the pistons. 98 Metro Rebuild Engine Rebuild Top and Bottom Detailed 1.0 Head Rebuild Guide Bottom End Rebuild Guide |

Use the 92 Long block, anything that bolts to it other than the valve cover and waterpump comes from the 96 engine. If you are swapping a 92 transmission for a 96, you will need to transfer the speedometer gear (at bottom of speedo cable housing) The reason for swapping the speedo gear is that the 92 car has 12 inch wheels and the 96 car has 13 inch wheels. Note: The 96 block has 4 bosses for 4 bolts for the AC compressor, the 92 only has 3 bosses but will still work. Very important! When transferring the 96 oil pump to the 92 block, you must use a new 1992 oil pump gasket! The blocks are machined differently. If you use the metal 96 gasket on the 92 block, oil will pour out of the block within seconds of cranking the engine. While you've got the engine apart, I would suggest changing the waterpump, cam & crankshaft seals as well as the CV axle seals on the transmission. If manual transmission, install new clutch & flywheel too. Edited by 96Geoman, Aug 9 2014, 10:04 AM.
