You can assume that I was completely lost on the point he was trying to make as well. Anyway, if we are calling going into full engine braking an "Italian Tuneup" then that is what I use to break in a new engine. Edited by rmcelwee, Aug 13 2014, 06:31 PM.

This procedure is also used to seat rings after a rebuild. |

Exactly. To my knowledge the original Ferrari version of the Italian Tune Up was just a high rpm loaded run(s) to clear carbon build up, without the engine braking/ring seating portion which is a common break in procedure. But if it helps clear up the problem and reduce oil consumption, then cool beans!

I found this article: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm This break break in looks similar to the ring freeing method I used. My only guess is that if the rings aren't too stuck, this can bust them loose. Now I know this didn't work on the POS G10 I had in my 1994 to start with. Once I got a replacement engine, I used to just floor it and watch the smoke come pouring out the back. I did this one time and pulled into the next gas station and added a quart of oil without even looking. I then checked and needed to add even more oil! That engine was the oil farting champion of all time! Conor |
