Motor Swaps...; Swapping a 4 cylinder for a 3

I have a 1990 Geo Metro 3 cylinder that needs a rebuild. I found a Geo Metro 4 cylinder motor. I'm guessing that it would be impossible to swap motors and put the 4 cylinder into the Geo Metro 3 cylinder car? What other motors will fit into my geo metro? Any?

I'll just repeat what I seen the experts on here write.

1) Are both motors from the same Gen? I.E. you are not trying to swap a '99 metro 4 cyl. into your '90 metro.

2) Are they both from automatic trans vehicles or are they both manual trans vehicles? If not, you are going to have issues with the wiring harnesses.

3) Suzuki Swift engines will also fit into Metros (Metros and Swifts were pretty much the same car in the '90s)

i dont think they ever had 4 cylinders in the 1st gens, did they? anyway, while doing a professional rebuild that will last as long as the original engine is no small feat, doing a refresh that will get you by for another 10000+ miles is not all that hard, especially on this engine. it does depend on what exactly is wrong though. mine burned oil badly, so i replaced the rings, rod bearings, and valve seals, and it runs fine now. it wouldve been a 1 day job if i didnt have to work on it in a yard 25+ miles from home.

Good bye

I put a 93 4 cylinder into a 91. I had a complete parts donor. Review my build, it took about 3 days and this is what I do for a living. The link is in my signature.

regardless of the unctuous wikipedia description, it is much more precise to use another system to decide what fits which and which parts to use for a swap.

mk1 86 to 88, mk2 89 to 91, mk3 92 to 94, mk4 95 to 97, and mk5 98 up. there were a few line changes in the late 94 and 95 years as geo transitioned to a new body style and upgraded engine management but basically, the "mark" method of enumeration is better to describe the variants.

another handy description for the model year you are working with is sf413 which handy info to have when you are searching for parts. sf413 refers to the chassis style and will work for world market parts substitutions.

the next thing helps to select the body style. there are only a few differences between the metro, sprint, firefly and the swift. hood, headlights, bumpers, and interior trim is pretty much all the cosmetic stuff.

up to 94 there was no engine option for a geo metro besides the g10. the swifts did have 8 valve single cam 4 cylinder engines and those will have parts that will bolt onto any chassis designated as sf413. the things that may be the hardest to locate would be axles and engine mounting arms. you can still order axles but the mount brackets will have to come from the used market. the engine wiring harness and proper ecu, likewise.

the front knuckles and brakes will need swapped out, too, and a minimum of 13" wheels will be required.

Thanks RV93,

I'm thinking that I should just forget about swapping motors and just do the valve/ring job. I'll have to touch base with you for help when I get that far. I appreciate it.

You may have to swap A LOT more than you planned on. This includes harnesses, ECM, and the like. It will be a time consuming job. The motor swap will only be a small part of it. Also, you may need to use the same transmission from the donor car if one is auto and one is manual.
