clunking noise when accelerating; and check engine light flashing

I just replaced the timing belt and have been driving for about a week. There is a noticeable clunking sound that comes from the front of the car when I accelerate. I will go and the car will act like it doesn't want to and then it clunks and will drive fine until the next stoplight. It does not happen if I accelerated very slowly. Today the check engine light started flashing just after it clunks each time. I had the code read and it is giving multiple misfires. Before the timing belt broke, the check engine light would come on intermittently because of a cylinder 2 misfire.

Anyone know what would cause this? Any help is appreciated!

some info on the car would help. 3 or 4 cyl? does it idle smoothly? i would suspect a timing issue, but that would normally cause a rough idle as well. have you changed the spark plugs recently? you may also want to check the spark plug wires. any other codes in there? might help...

It is a 4 cylinder. I changed the spark plugs yesterday and it helped a lot, but didn't completely solve the issue. The check engine light went off on its own while driving so I am not sure if that means that the misfire is definitely gone or not? It does have a rough idle and it still acts like it doesn't want to go and clunks, but not as noticeably or loudly.

Trying to imagine how the clunk is tied in to the misfire. Do you have an auto transmission? If you had a manual transmission I would expect you to say, "I feel a clunk when I shift" or "If I push in the clutch the problem goes away". So I am guessing you have an auto. So part of your symptoms may be the transmission. There are many threads of people having engine problems when the transmission wont shift when its supposed to. That is often tied to a bad capacitor in the TCM. But you should google those threads and see if the symptoms are similar to yours.

When you changed the belt, did you remove the engine mount (as some people suggest on the 4 cylinder)? If so maybe the mount is loose or damaged. That would explain the clunk but not the misfire. Does the auto metro have a torque strut? If so check your torque strut for damaged rubber.

Thanks for the suggestions! Yes the mount was removed. In researching the issue, some had mentioned the mount but I didn't think that was my problem because of the misfire. What should I look for when checking the mount?

I will look into the torque strut and the transmission ideas. The check engine light has stayed off today and I am much happier with the way that it drives since I changed the spark plugs. I am assuming that the misfire was due to the plugs, but the noise still bothers me.

Are the bolts on water pump pulley tight?
