What oil do you guys run?

What brand and weight of oil do you guys use in your Metros, namely 3cyls?

A favorite high mileage oil I use is Vavoline MaxLife. My Metro is due for an oil change in about 400 miles so I was wondering if that's what I should stick with for the Metro or is there something else you guys would recommend?

I'll likely get a Gold (FIL 1348, $6.50) or Platinum (PFL 41348, $12.50) Napa oil filter. I don't like to skimp on oil filters. I usually go by 6 month month intervals since MaxLife is a semi-synthetic oil and costs a little more than non-HM conventional. Also, I don't drive a great deal either. My annual miles are usually around 10k if I am driving a lot.

Or should I really consider quarterly oil changes with a Metro rather than semi-annual?

Really? You change your SYNTHETIC oil twice a month? That seems extremely wasteful. That has to cost about $60/mo assuming you DIY.

How the heck do you even run that many miles a month and still find time for sleep? :-/

2 people drive the car. My moms husband and I. He has a 130 mile trip for work and I have a 85 mile trip

*edit* soon as his job builds something closer to our house then this will change. Also the car gets driven to doctor visits for my sick mom and to the store, the car is a working fool, non stop all the time just go go go go go honestly we don't know what we would do if the metro took a poop. The Honda gets ok mpg the truck and eclipse get bad mpg. Just saves lots of $$$ in repairs and gas for the metro

Umm... wouldn't 0w30 be for summer months and 10w30 or 5w30 be for winter?

For a while I ran Motorcraft partial synthetic 5w-20 with a cheapo oil filter. Does fairly well. But since I've bought a Honda Odysessy I will be changing to Mobile 1 5w-20 with a cheapo oil filter.

I think any type of motor oil you put into a G10 will do alright as long a you change it regularly. Say 3k for dino oil and 5k for synthetic.

Mobile 1 syn., 5W30 year round. Last filter was a NAPA Gold.

But, as usual, we will get a lot of opinions. :smackface :lol

Yes, I expected a wide range of opinions. I kind of had my mind set on what I wanted to start with, but I still wanted to hear what others run

For my car, I think MaxLife 10w30 and a Napa Gold or Platinum filter is probably the most cost effective and good quality for my engine. The clock has 196K on it and it may be the original engine. A high mileage engine suddenly introduced to full synthetic can sometimes cause oil burning and/or leaks due to being too thin, so blend is the most I trust in a 20+ year old high mileage engine. It has added detergents to help old seals and things in the engine without being snake oil.

They do make a Mobile 1 high mileage oil and it's not much more expensive than MaxLife from Wal-Mart, based on the current pricing I see. (Motor oil is one of the few things I buy from WM)

If I am changing the oil quarterly, I'm not sure it's worth the extra $6-7 for Mobile 1 over MaxLife. If I change it based on 3,000 miles or 6 months, then Mobile 1 HM would be worth it. I guess could go two ways:

3/mo or 3,000 miles - MaxLife ($18) + Napa Gold ($7)
6/mo or 5,000 miles - M1 HM ($24) + Napa Plat. ($13)

M1 HM would be cheaper in the long run with less frequent oil change intervals. I don't do a great deal of driving mostly so I'm not sure I need more frequent oil changes if I run a premium oil and filter. Any differing opinions on that?

Keep in mind, I have to drive to a rental garage to do my own oil changes so it's a lot of hassle and extra cost (gas, 30 minutes rental time) to do more frequent oil changes.

I think the general rule these days is that if your engine has leaks, yes adding a synthetic will leak, maybe more.

From: www.mobiloil.com/Car_Care/AskMobil/High_Mileage_Vehicles
Question: Will Higher Mileage Vehicles Leak More When Switched to Synthetic Oil? I've always heard that higher mileage vehicles will be more prone to oil leaks if one changes from regular to fully synthetic. True or not? My '97 Expedition has 101,000 miles with regular oil. What's the best for me? -- Patrick Poe, Norman, OK
Answer:
Mobil 1 High Mileage is formulated with seal swells that will help eliminate leakage. We recommend you switch to Mobil 1 High Mileage for your vehicle. If your vehicle is not leaking now, switching to synthetic will not suddenly cause it to leak. Switching to a synthetic now may help you to maximize the life of your Expedition. If your vehicle is leaking before you change to synthetic, it will probably continue to leak with synthetic. However, by using Mobil 1 High Mileage it is possible that leakage could be eliminated or reduced. It depends on what is causing the leak.

From: MaxLife Full Synthetic High Mileage Oils

  • Anti-oxidant additives reduce oil viscosity breakdown to help prevent engine-clogging sludge and deposit formation
  • Detergents chemically bond with and remove existing sludge and deposits
  • Additional friction-reducing additives help reduce abrasion
  • Anti-wear agents help prevent engine damage
  • Seal conditioners to rejuvenate aging seals and help prevent leaks
  • Full synthetic base oil to withstand engine heat and oxidation
