For the next two oil changes, I'm going to be using Valvoline MaxLife 5W-30. I found a $6 off coupon (on coupons.com) if you buy two, but only good at Wal-Mart. As much as I hate WM, you can't beat that. They run $16.17/5qt here so they are $13.17/5qt after the coupon, but you have to buy two. Even so... $26.34 for 10 qts of high mileage synthetic blend is a good deal I couldn't pass up in the long term. I'm good for the next 6 months now on oil.

I also went by O'Reilly and considered a MicroGuard filter but decided not to. I want to go to Napa and get a Napa Silver filter. They might be equally as good though since they are priced about the same.

WM carries basic Purolator filters (not PureOne) but they were out of the one for the Metro 1.0.

In 30 degrees Fahrenheit weather, 10W-*, 5W-* and 0W-* will all act exactly the same at startup since they are all within the range of cold weather start ups. They will also act all the same at 100 degree startups.
:smackface Completely wrong.

0W-30. 5W-30 and 10W-30 act differently at anything below 100° or so. That's the whole point.
Thank you woodie. :gp

The Alabama comment...lol
I was just using Alabama as a random example of a state with a lot of rural towns that might not have a store carrying every oil weight out there. :lol

Unless things have changed the napa house filters are made by wix. Atleast they were when I worked for them years ago. Now I know oreilly carries wix as well. I use nothing but wix filters.

Yes, that's why I am favoring Napa/Wix.

True or not? I don't know: I read that Purolator makes the O'Reilly's oil filters.

My mom almost only used Fram on her 91 Corolla for nearly 18 years and the engine was still fine at 168k on the original engine and AT when I got rid of it damaged from a wreck but still driving. Take that as you will.

Well, they also said that 10W-40 was okay. Then they later determined that it was contributing to the burned valves problem and should never be used.
"They" who? The 93 owner's manual says in bold letters not to use 10w-40.
The exact same they who wrote your book. It says that in bold letters because sometime in '91 they figured out it was a problem and issued a tech bulletin saying so. The earlier recommendation was for 5W-30 or 10W-40.

Sounds like it was a (serious) typo.
