Welcome and good luck with your rebuild process! :cheers

Maybe you don't need a machine shop? :dunno
Agreed, but that depends partly on what type and just how much of a "threat" he wants his Metro to be. When it comes to rebuilds, there are differences between apples and lemons, as well as notable differences between apples and more precise apples.

I think that one thing is important to consider if someone chooses to go the "non-machine shop/non-FSM rebuild route - IMHO there is a major difference between a "quick and dirty and cheap" rebuild done by the typical DIY'er who just (maybe?) hand hones the cylinders and throws some rings in it without concern for tolerances and a good professional "economy rebuild" done by some of those here.

In my opinion, the reason that folks like Glenn, (yes I believe even Glenn has recommended this type of "economy rebuild' as well when he believes it is appropriate) Johnny Mullet and Big Rhino have such good success at what I consider to be a "professional economy rebuilds" is because they are professionals and have unique knowledge and experience that allows them to make very good judgement calls when it comes to the appropriateness of evaluating the condition of a particular G10 once they are into it, and deciding to re-use certain parts or not replace others, or not using "contract" services like machine shops while still producing a rebuild that will provide reliable, continued service.

We can not praise those guys (deservedly) for their expert level knowledge and experience with G10s, and at the same time believe anyone can reproduce the exact same type of judgements, good decisions, and do the same quality of work they do just because we read a thread and looked at some pictures. I think that is an obvious reality that is often overlooked when suggesting that virtually anyone can do it with the implication that the exact same results can be achieved. Doing a rebuild by following a few threads is one thing. How it will turn out and how long it will last is another, and I don't think it's an insult to any of us to believe that a lot of that depends on who does that work.

I would consider a "professional economy rebuild" and would put my trust in those that I mentioned and their work (and myapologies to those I left out of this list, i know there are more of you) in a heartbeat if I had a Metro that I only hoped to get several more years of decent service out of, was waiting for the frame horns to separate, it was all I could afford at the time, and/or was not interested in getting the absolutely best performance possible, which does require precision measuring and machining in accordance with the FSM procedures and tolerances to achieve.

As ironic as it may sound, I believe that for an economy rebuild, it is even more important to have that work done by someone as experienced as we can get to do it because their experience and judgement may make all the difference between it providing several more years of reliable service and starting a new thread that begins with the familiar "I rebuilt/replaced my engine/head a few thousand miles ago and now...."

Whichever route you choose, best of luck to you! :thumb
